View Full Version : Is there "REALLY" a contingency plan for an aircraft crash into the sea?

Like when the Aircraft is far away from shore?
In my opinion Basically, the contingency plan is just there to be there. It won't actually do much. History proves this countless times.
I was going to post in the debate section but i don't really think this is a debate? It's more of a question :S
The reason why i ask this is seeing if the worst would happen to me which i hate to think it would - what would the prosegers be?

Wait, and stay warm. There'd be a rescue within hours.

uhh in an ideal scenario the aircraft would use emergency transponder code, so air traffic control could track where the plane was before sending in rescue crews

If I'm ever on a plane and the pilot comes on the radio and announces that we're going to crash, I can tell you now that I wont be thinking about contingency plans......I'd be storming my way to the back of the cabin to raid the drinks cart so that I could get drunk and enjoy the way down.
If my plane is going to crash anywhere, never mind the sea, I don't rate my chances of survival too highly.
Just try to enjoy the view. It's far from ideal, but it's a pretty decent way to die.

Perfect Crash:

if u crash in the sea, the yellow slides come out, they are used are floatation devices

Personally, I think the pilots would be more concerned about stopping the plane crashing rather than telling everyone it's going to crash :P

Stay warm and afloat, rescue should take a few hours max.

Don't worry, an inflatable raft will appear!
Seriously, i actually believe that the safety demos on planes are just there to relax you, if your going to hit the sea at god knows what speed you're obviously going to die..

Despite the safety video and how the wonderfull woman speaks about her light and whistle for attracting attention, if you crash into the see at over 500mph what you are going to do next is not even worth thinkng about. Your chances of survival are very very slim. They just don't say anything so not to scare people.

Did you know that the crash position is no way to keep you safe?
it's too protect your gums so your body can be identified.

LOL what a crock of ****
a line of gums from bodies.. two people walking alongside one another, a mum and an official
*woman points to some gums*
"yep, these are jacks gums alright"
pmsl. thanks for the laugh

pmsl. thanks for the laughActually dental records are one of the most common ways of identifying people when there's not much to go by. I was unaware though you go in the position to protect your gums, why don't they just give us gumshields :P

Well considering most airplanes have no intention of landing on the sea their reasons for ending up there are going to be in ways it was not intended. Either suffering hydraulic failure resulting in a high speed dive crashing into the sea should the plane become uncontrolable! Or they loose the engines resulting in it crashing and destrcuting on impact. Either way your chances are slim, the speed was hoeve an example and has been known to happen.

Ok let's not all get into an argument here! :P
It's true that dental records are used to identify a body when there isn't much to go by (i.e if the body is completely frazzled in a fire or plane crash). I didn't know that's what the position is for though I thought it was to protect face from smashing into the seat in front of you :P Silly I know. It would feel a bit wierd getting into that position, almost as if you were giving in and like 'oh I'm dying to lets get into the death position'.
Is it just me though but I don't understand how you would die because I would have thought the plane wouldn't blow up upon impact because it's water or am I missing something xD

The impact speed will be 500mph+, and the rate of combustion happening within aircraft useally make it blow.

No, we wont crash at 500mph+ ;/, and the way we crash is the most safest way that the pilot would choose and to minumise the danger of blowing up, or in other words, getting flat.
Just going to throw this out there,
in all aviation history, no ones life has ever been saved by a life jacket.
Most the time a plane will just break apart on impact the surface tension of water during an impact at roughly 125mph is the equivilent of concrete.
The average cruise speed of lets say a boeing 747 is 570mph.

It did I remember reading somewhere that a plane took off but then failed and crashed into a huge sort of lake/sea in San Fransisco and the people used the lifejackets because I remember a woman from the cabin crew been seen as a hero because she got people onto the tail of the plane and died because she didnt have her life jacket on I will find the link!
