So if any of you haven't heard yet, Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for stealing his song, "If I Could Fly" and using in their new hit single, "Viva La Vida."

For all who don't know Joe Satriani is a guitar god, and pretty much whatever he says goes...

Now here is a mash up of the two.

http://www.youtube.com/index?&ytsession=wWqy83lRNUB1UawNCqXksAZWinJAYMrRWAKeyKFq Lpm5at3xhKiyAmfvgwQzbfGLwG3HR0gYwmEbM9mD6pyYNWp1zm 5OKRhdw2uoVlWmQ5QcQt2M4hfZu2E4yOWjZOGmsMSpV45sHiPe 5czdjdJqAYg2WfIOPbwR7RDn8UocbTh_vdzHTx9iMOIM_Zao-Y7ZU5LKLi1fudlT2g6CQZKuGfa-R0bKAH2uQq5xHXEdswaX4drAr0q56g

Pretty crazy huh? What's even worse is, "If I Could Fly" was released a year and a half ago... Right around the same time Coldplay was writing their new album. Coldplay has released statements saying that they did not steal anything from Joe. It's true that in the Music Industry you'll eventually step on other people's ground, but that is WAY too close to be coincidence.

This raises some concern about all of the Grammy Nominations that Coldplay received for Viva La Vida, because if this makes it to court, (which it looks like it will) Coldplay will not have a chance in hell at winning, and will probably be stripped of their nominations. This would be a first in history, so be sure to keep an eye on this one.

Here is an article from Pitch Fork Media.

That's utterly ridiculous, there are often similarities in music with various artists, and unless there is a large enough piece that is exactly the same then Satriani won't have a leg to stand on in court.

true. no way he's going to win. there has to be a huge similarity between them for him to win. joe satriani is just mad cause hes no longer relevant.

oh, and as if grammys mean anything. milli vanilli got a grammy, and they turned out to be fake.

ugh. i wish you knew what you were talking about before you posted. even if satriani had a decent case (which he doesnt- its extremely difficult to win a case like this) they still wouldnt have anything stopping them from making new songs

What about Wonderwall and that Travis song? Travis openly admitted to using the same chords and the intro to both songs sound identical :s This is a ridiculous reason to sue somebody and only shows how pathetic and out of talent that Satrini is.

I can understand a few notes and coincidence. But that's too close.
I hope, the appropiate action is taken. As I for one will vouch that to be a copy.

LOL; there's only similiarity for a few seconds there... Making a mountain out of a mole hill.

The tune goes hand in hand. If it was a few smaller notes fair does.

I can see his point in the main riff.

"Satriani had been trying to contact coldplay about the song but they ignored him.

Eventually when they had no option but to respond, Chris Martin denied that he'd ever heard of Satriani, I guess he forgot having spoke about him in an interview in 2002 (VH1)"
looks like he got owned there :)

Hope he sues them, Satriani is god.

lol @ how the solo is clearly not even close to coldplay's song as it goes on.

people, get over yourselves. pop music is all based on repeating- both these songs are literally the same 4 or 5 notes over and over. theres millions and millions of songs the majority of popular ones being written in the exact same key, there's bound to be some coincidences. oh by the way, everyone has failed miserably to compare anything other than the chorus and solo of the song. coldplay have better things to do than to copy joe satriani.

hell, you're wasting your time if you just listen to joe satriani.

Similar in areas, nowhere near close enough to sue though lol.

Also notice how the "copied" bit isn't even musically similar. Satriani of course is on a guitar because he's boring like that and doesn't make anything other than tracks for guitar, whereas the Coldplay sample that apparently sounds so much like it is sung. Woops! You can't copyright a sung melody, unlucky my dears
