If I give my friend my wow discs and they use the 10 day trial code that came inside it, will it add them as a recruited friend for my account or do I have to do the email thingy too?

You need to do emails.

Its pointless sending the trial as it takes ages to download from a browser.
So yes, lending the disks is the best thing to do.
And no, it does not active the trial and link to your account.
