The last thread was closed due to pointless posting, which is a bit not nice, so I've copied it here, because a couple of people were trying to start a discussion between the pictures.

I thought I'd tell you what's going on...

Eurovision season is beginning in the UK early - on January 3rd, the first round of 'Your Country Needs You' will take place - a show hosted by Graham Norton to help Andrew Lloyd-Webber pick someone to sing for the UK. Andrew Lloyd-Webber will write the song after a singer has been chosen, and probably unveil that on another show.

Terry Wogan will no longer be commentating for the UK, after 35 years in the booths. Graham Norton will be taking his place, with Paddy O'Connell and possibly Caroline Flack maybe doing the semi-finals, as they did this year.

In the real thing, there is one huge change: the winner will no longer be decided by full televoting. The votes will be decided 50% by televoting, 50% by jury. Each jury will consist of five music professionals with no link to any of the singers. The points will be presented as usual, but taking these two factors into account rather than just televoting. The contest will take place on the 12th, 14th and 16th May.

It is expected that 44 or more countries will take part, with the return of Slovakia and the withdrawal of Georgia. Svante Stockselius said there will be a few surprises, meaning a possible return of Italy, who withdrew in 1997 after a string of poor results, Monaco, who withdrew in 2006 after a string of poor results and Austria, who withdrew in 2007 after a string of poor results. Maybe Georgia, because the war is over.

Overall, I am quite fancying the UK's chances at the contest this year, because the juries liked our song last contest.

I think the acts for Your Country Needs You will be revealed in the next couple of weeks. The chances are they're not famous, but a good singer with a memorable song makes good results with juries :).

The ting tings would probally get us most points since Lulu.

Katrina and the Waves got the UK the most points ever - 227 in 1997.

Lily de la Haye-Earle has been named as the first performer on Your Country Needs You.

Jonny Logan is rumoured to be singing for Ireland, Sakis Rouvas (2004, 3rd Place, 2006 host) will perform for Greece, and many Swedish regulars have been confirmed to be entering Melodifestivalen (if these names mean anything) Mans Zelmerlow, Shirley Clamp, BWO, Alcazar and Molly Sanden.

It is unlikely that we will see Ruth or the Ting Tings in Your Country Needs You, since Ruth was on X Factor at the time of auditions, and it would ruin the Ting Tings' career.

Also, there are no rules on what country representatives are from, and if they are, they are made by the broadcaster. Katrina is American, and the Former Yugoslavia swap acts left, right and centre.

A sample wouldn't be allowed - all songs have to be 100% original.

They wouldn't need British passports, and what are the chances of Katy Perry and Rihanna sending a video in to Andrew Lloyd Webber? On second thoughts, I think entrants this year need to be British.

The point is, did Leona and Alexandra send a video to Andrew Lloyd-Webber? I doubt it.

Andrew knows his onions - he's used the same format to find people to perform on the West End - Eurovision is nothing in comparison. Someone good will be found, and he will write them an amazing song, and it will be fabulous, and the juries will love it!! ^.^!!

She shouldn't need to contact him, he should contact her.

The juries will have an impact - the Bulgarian jury would have given us 8 points, the Israeli jury would have given us 7 or 8 points, and the San Marinese Jury gave us 6 points, and with the country being so small, our points from them were off a jury.

We need a good song to begin with, to appeal to the juries, then a good performance, to appeal to the audience at home.

The BBC are making an effort this year, so I think we shouldn't pass comment on a lack of a Leona, whose career is going too well to enter Eurovision, until after this year's contest. If we win, or get in the top ten, we'll have a kajillion famous people waiting to perform.

In other news, the format for the first two "Your Country Needs You" shows have been announced:

In the first week, the contestants have to do Eurovision style performances, and on the second week, they have to try out some famous gimmicks, like skirt-ripping, costume changing and dance routines.

It's incredibly cheesey, but it's the nature of the contest, so it's OK.

A 60-odd year old man is definitely going to win the votes of the young people in Europe. I totally agree.

YCNY is going to be a right laugh - they're going to make the contestants do Eurovision style tasks and sing old Eurovision songs. The BBC are realising that they need to make an effort in order to come anywhere near to winning, and that's a good thing.

I think, in the future, they should do a big Swedish-style selection next year. In Sweden, they have the Melodifestivalen (Melody Festival) where 32 performers sing their songs, and there are 4 semifinals, a second chance round and a final.

All the big Swedish stars enter, and it doesn't harm their career, because Swedish Eurovision music is very close to what most Swedish people listen to. Nobody liked that fishy cow who sang for Sweden this year anyway.

She didn't at the time - we came 22nd. That was a bad year for all of the big 4. The bottom 4 was Spain, UK, France and Germany - the 4 countries who put most of the funding into the EBU and the contest.

Javine's song was quite similar to Helena Paparizou who won, but Helena is a better singer, and if it wasn't for Javine not getting into Girls Aloud, they wouldn't be where they are now, and she wouldn't have been known as a homewrecking *****.

The first show of YCNY is tomorrow at 1910 on BBC one. It's a preview show, showing Andrew Lloyd Webber's tour of Europe, and his discussion with Vladamir Putin about Eurovision. You will also see VP tell ALW that he will be voting for the UK, meaning we might be destined for points from Russia.

I think in the last 5 years, our best song was the 2004 one, by James Fox off Fame Academy.

His main competition would be Sakis from Greece, who is an experienced singer and has real Eurovision experience coming third in 2004 and hosting the 2006 contest.

The winner of YCNY will make an appearance at the final of Malta's EuroSong contest on February 7th, and Andrew has said he will be funding a huge promotional tour of Europe for the winner.

If you want to listen to the four entries which have been announced, you can do so here:
Montenegro (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=26ffn-KcVj4)
Albania (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BGU30s9f86E)

The title of our song is My Time. Denmark, Finland and Romania will also select their songs this Saturday, with the Netherlands and Slovenia picking on Sunday.

If anyone fancies watching some of the other countries selections, I will post some links here. Azerbaijan, Sweden and Malta are some of the countries to look out for, as they are pulling out all the stops this year. Slovakia will be back with a bang, too.

The audience know an out of tune singer when they see one. The juries will also know a good song when they see one. I am rooting for Jade to win!

A good jury score could mean 5 or 6 points for the UK alone! The juries had a great effect on the Junior Eurovision last year. Countries who send good songs and never even scrape the top 10 got top 5 positions and a country other than Belarus or Russia won!

Norway has emerged as a strong favourite after selecting their entry tonight.
Watch it here! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTdndLFY3W0&eurl=http://www.esctime.com/news/5388&feature=player_embedded) Norway winning would be progress, because it's not got a lot of neighbours to vote for it (Finland and Sweden and Denmark aren't going to be enough on their own).

Paddy Power have opened betting for the contest with odds only for UK (10-1 compared to last year's odds of 100-1 by the final night), Ireland (18-1) and Spain (50-1).

To the people who say jury voting will have no impact: The 6 points we received from San Marino last year were given by a jury, and other juries would have given us 8s and 7s. Our last victory was because all but 5 countries used juries, and we beat Ireland by 70-ish points. A couple of years after, people realised that they could make sure the UK didn't get a top 5 position and voted for someone else.

finlands entry is goooooooood

I really like that one. My top 5 not including UK:

3) Georgia
4) Norway
5) Finland

Other songs I like: Ireland (modern and fun), Moldova (so bad it's good), France (very French, but a bit *too* French for Eurovision), Germany (nice rhythm, but easily forgettable)

Toilet breaks: Belarus (shocking rock song with a less than pleasing on the eye singer), Bulgaria (awful singers with an awful song), Cyprus (really bad live singer!), Denmark (a song written by Ronan Keating with a Ronan Keating clone singer).

Some good stuff, just good stuff

If they weren't singing with funny little accents, it probably wouldn't be so bad, but because of the war last year, they're doing it to be on the safe side, because all hell will break loose if Stephane and 3G stand and sing that to Putin's face in May - Putin has confirmed he will be going to the contest, because he's quite the Eurovision fan.

Georgian song complete with AFP news report (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJXm6fFeUDE)

In other news, Sweden will be selecting the final (42nd or 43rd - depending on Georgia's situation) song of the contest. Big favourites are Alcazar (This is the World We Live in from 2004 is one of their international hits - their third try in the Swedish contest, first time they have got to the final!), Måns Zelmerlöw (a minor Swedish superstar after coming third in Swedish Idol in 2006. He came 3rd in the Swedish selection in 2007) and Malena (a pop-opera singer who is looking quite likely to win it).

Other singers tonight are Emilia (that 'Big Big Girl' song) and the Swedish Junior Eurovision 2006 or 2007 (two sisters did it one after the other - can't remember which one it is) representative (she's all grown up now!), a band called EMD includes the non-professional half of the Eurovision Dance Contest 2008 couple and Caroline af Ugglas (Caroline the Ugly, I believe her name translates as!), who has a quite boring song.

Melodifestivalen is definitely the most anticipated National Final, with Eurovision fans coming from far and wide to see it in the Ericsson Globe ('Globen') every year. It's the conclusion of 6 weeks of searching for their new Eurovision representative, and it always holds lots of surprises, because lots of Eurovision stars from years gone by enter again and again.

Watch it here at 7pm! (http://www.svt.se/melodifestivalen)

P.S. I will post the running order complete with links to all the songs on Monday evening! :)

Is it better to sing nearer to the end?

YES YES YES YES YES!

23 is a fabulous position to sing!

Singers who sung 23rd came...:
2008 6th (good song)
2007 8th
2006 11th
2005 5th (very good song)
2004 18th (with a truly awful song)
2003 21st
2002 1st
2001 2nd
2000 6th
1999 6th

When the UK last won in 1997, Katrina and the Waves sung in 24th and got an extremely high (for the time) score of 227, gathering top scores from 10 countries!

It's a safe draw, unless Bosnia and Herzegovina or Norway are placed in 24th (draws take place at the press conferences after the semi-finals - the participants get to pick numbers out of baskets), with the nice, but not exactly memorable Spanish song in 25th.

The song was disquilified because they were purposley taking the mic out of the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Also because they mix politics with show business. I mean common! Why take the mic? This isnt about politics but about singing? Anyway Im Russian and thats what I watched on the Russian News. But yh, they were warned so you cant say were not fair. :)

GL to UK Btw they have VERY high chances. Their song is amazing.

Our country selection, Your Country Needs You. 6 people got through to the final, we chose her :D

People seem so quick to say we are so bad at Eurovision and not many people realise that out of the 53 contests held so far in 42 of them we have come in a Top 10 position, 23 of them we have come in a Top 3 position and we have won 5, which is only 2nd to Ireland's 7 in most amount of wins. Plus if we combined everyones points over the years we've earned the most points out of any other country by a long shot.

This year there are a whole bunch of changes to our own selection and to Eurovision itself which gives us a much larger chance of winning, so we actually have high hopes this year. If we don't win we'll get a high position for sure. Kapow!

The absolutely lush stage is coming along nicely :D

Good one .

Out of the other 5, only one was good, and she went out second.

We are coming tenth out of 42 in the betting odds, and out of those ten, Sweden, Malta and Estonia might not even qualify.

We need to wait for rehearsals, where the odds will be turned upside down. After the Amsterdam Preview Party, Ukraine's odds went down dramatically, with a stage show of semi-naked dancers and a singer who is attractive in her own special way.

Jury voting is always unpredictable, and they always favour the UK, ballads and classy performance, and our song is by far the best ballad. The others are rather average. The shortest odds available on the UK are 20-1 compared to the 50-1 on the UK this time last year.

Our song last year was a load of poo - but some broadcasters announced their jury votes and the UK got more points from 3 countries' juries than 41 countries' televotes (and the San Marinese jury).

We're now in Eurovision month! In just 11 days, the first 18 countries will perform in the first semifinal!

Rehearsals begin on Sunday morning, with the first 9 countries rehearsing. Jade will rehearse on May 9th.

A quick top 10 on the betting (with longest odds):
1. Norway (7/4)
2. Greece (7/1)
3. Turkey (10/1)
4. United Kingdom (20/1)
5. Azerbaijan (25/1)
6. Ukraine (25/1)
7. Sweden (25/1)
8. Malta (25/1)
9. Bosnia & Herzegovina (28/1)
10. France (33/1)

So in this top ten are three four who never ever do well: Norway (who did come 5th last year by sending a decent song - it can be done!), United Kingdom, Malta (whose representative came 2nd in 1998 in Birmingham and 3rd in 2005 in Kyiv) and France (who is a big superstar in many countries in Europe).

It has been confirmed by the BBC that if you press red during the three shows, you can have the lyrics on screen in the language they're being sung in and English and that Paddy O'Connell and Sarah Cawood will be commentating on the semifinals.

The postcards and green room designs have been revealed. The postcards appear to be people running around futuristic cartoons with landmarks the country in the colours of the country, with Miss World popping up at the end in her costume as a stereotypical woman from the country about to appear (that's why the UK one looks like she gets around a bit). The green room design is based on the "Periodic Table of Eurovision Elements", with the countries arranged by the year they first entered and the positions they get, meaning the UK is near the beginning with an entry year of 1957 and a lot of good positions.

*The most talented singer out the bunch.
Can't they use a proper singer like in the past? We only ever won because we used a world-known singer like Cliff Richard or Lulu, and any other times were probably due to a decent singer too. Don't other countries use big singers too? As in, singers which are well-known in the country?

Sammeth.
02-05-2009, 06:44 PM
Cliff Richard didn't win for us! Jade used to be signed to a record label and is a West End actress too, so she is a professional just not well known. Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the most famous people in the world thanks to his legendary status in theatre - he might have become a bit of a joke here thanks to his endless reality TV shows, but in Europe they worship him. He'll be on stage playing with Jade on the night so yaknow, we have got someone amazing up there.

Other countries use the same basis and format for their national selection process, usually a few acts and its voted on by the public however they aren't always overly famous in their native country, most take the same approach as us. I think France this year are sending a really famous singer from their country, which is fair enough. You'll get the odd few countries who will also send in their best talent but it might not reflect what other countries in Europe like so you can never be sure sending in a famous singer will mean that you'll get more points. Sweden seem to take things the most serious out of any other country in Europe. They have Melodifestivalen which may as well be called Swedevision as its basically Eurovision but just for Sweden. Its epic.

So yeah, our famous singers have helped us win but when out of 53 contests we've come top ten in over 40 of them, its never going to always be the famous singers who guarantee a high position as the majority are probably lesser known in Europe than anyone else.

The thing is, when we used to win it wasn't because we used to send our pride and glory but it was because phone voting wasn't as widespread. In fact the last time we won was in 1997 and then only five countries had phone voting (one of them being us). Last year we came last however, as Jack has said, if we had used the points from the Back Up juries (only 3 juries points were released) we had something like 24 points which means we got way more points from 3 juries than we did from 42 countries televotes combined. This year there is a 50/50 televote/jury split so we can hope to do better than we have done in previous years where political block voting was rife.

Every year there are juries voting, however they only vote in case something goes wrong with that specific countries televotes. And then there was San Marino who didn't have televotes (cus, well... it's San Marino) so they had a jury. We get good points from country juries as they vote on the quality of the song. They are made up of professionals from the music industry in those specific countries, they aren't related to any of the contestants, and they don't vote politically as can be seen from contests when juries had to be used because televoting didn't exist.

All in all, we will do a lot better this year due to the fact it will be a little less political, and we have taken it seriously. We've done what all other countries do, and our entrant has been on a 20 country tour singing our song around and about in different countries on television, so everyone knows our song already. We've never done that before yet every other country DOES. We've taken a lot of steps to ensure we get at least a good position (the tour, sending a good song, sending a good singer, sending a good composer, sending a good lyricist) and the contest itself has taken steps to try and prevent political voting, and we have a really good song position being 23rd to perform out of 25.

I have high hopes for a top ten position, top three if we are lucky. We won't win but I'm estimating around 5-10ish.

In 1969 when Lulu won, it won't have made a difference whether she was well known, because there would have been 10 people in little rooms in 16 countries listening in on the contest, who probably can't speak English, so the repeated line of "Boom bang-a-bang, boom bang-a-bang, oh oh oh" was probably the deciding factor in that.

Cliff Richard's songs were nice and cheerful, but came second and third, but that wasn't due to the fact that he was Cliff Richard.

Big stars might help once it is proven that the UK can get good positions and the contest's reputation as a career ruiner has worn off. Dima Bilan is a big star in Eastern Europe as is Marija Serifovic who won in 2007.

Sweden always send big stars, because their annual Melodifestivalen contest attracts loads of them, because it's publicity, and the Swedish are more forgiving to their popstars.

It's a bit too much for Leona Lewis or someone to risk, because if their entry is a flop, their career will go down the drain!

Arlene Phillips has been showing Jade how to do a 'fabulous walk' as part of her performance.

I am very impressed at the Icelandic backing singers because they are in tune and sing very well. Maybe that's because one of last year's Icelandic representatives is in her backing group along with a Danish (although she's Icelandic) Eurovision hopeful from this year, who lost out to the Ronan Keating clone.

I've noticed Carola's wind machine has been in use a lot this year and is very effective.

P.S. - I'd watch the bloke from Bosnia's pants don't split if I was organising the contest. It's quite horrific watching him there doing the splits when his bulge is on the verge of exploding :(.

I thought he sounded a bit off - I thought I was the only one hearing that, the way people go on about things. I didn't expect Elena to be that good either - she was bobbins at the national final.

I think Kaas is too good for Eurovision. It's going to ruin her career!

Where on www.eurovision.tv would I find the live stream to the rehearsals... or is it one of those recorded ones that they upload later.

Sammeth.
09-05-2009, 11:14 AM
I always watch them on the Eurovision YouTube channel. They are uploaded relatively quickly - just take their rehearsal times, apply it to GMT and thats around the time they should be up on youtube (so for example if Jade was rehearsing at 12:00 CET, it would be on YouTube 12:00 GMT). CET is +3.

REHEARSALS
09:00 CET - 09:30 CET: Denmark
09:30 CET - 10:00 CET: Slovenia
10:00 CET - 10:30 CET: Hungary
10:30 CET - 11:00 CET: Lunch
11:30 CET - 12:00 CET: Azerbaijan
12:00 CET - 12:30 CET: Greece
12:30 CET - 13:10 CET: France
13:00 CET - 13:20 CET: Break
13:20 CET - 14:00 CET: Russia
14:00 CET - 14:40 CET: Germany
14:40 CET - 15:20 CET: United Kingdom
15:20 CET - 16:20 CET: Dinner

Jade is currently nearing the end of her rehearsal. :8

Also what do you all think what Jade will be wearing for this weeks Eurovision Song Contest 2009 Finale?

I think she'll wear like a dress with our country flag ( United Kingdom )

She will be wearing a lush dress, she confirmed the designer Amanda Wakely will be designing it for her so I doubt (HOPE) it won't be anything as cheesy as wearing the Union Flag! :P

She's not Geri Halliwell! She's a classy lady. I think she'll wear a lovely flowing dress which moves nicely when she goes down the stairs.

That top 10 could happen, but Hadise will not be that high. She's an awful singer.

I hope you all have your European themed snacks at the ready.

According to the bookies the following will go through:
Montenegro
Sweden
Armenia
Switzerland
Turkey
Iceland
Finland
Portugal
Malta
Bosnia & Herzegovina

Fans mainly agree with this, however success for FYR Macedonia and Belarus is forecasted by them. Failure for Montenegro and Switzerland is also predicted by fans.

What to expect from tonight:
- To be amazed by the fabulous show put on by the Russians
- To be bewildered by the fact that t.A.T.u are still around
- To be amused by tonight's hosts' bad English (the ones on Saturday WILL be better)
- To be disappointed that there's no hope in hell that your favourite (ANDORRA OF COURSE!) will get through
- To be fluent in Russian with the snippets at the end of the postcards (with words such as Welcome, Hi, Music and Round loaf of bread)

BT are offering cheap international phone calls, and they're selling them to people as a special offer to ring people to tell them to vote for the UK.

I got this tweet today:
@HairyEmu Glad you love Jade too! We're campaigning for people to ring friends and family abroad, to help Jade's votes!www.bt.com/eurovision

Desperation from someone at BT to not be one of the 15,000 to lose their job...

This is a trickier semi-final to predict. Other names floating around are Cyprus, Moldova and Hungary. Out of that ten, Ireland and Lithuania are being doubted. Of course, all we can do is wait and see.

What to expect from tonight:
- To be amazed by another fabulous show put on by the Russians
- To be amused by tonight's hosts' bad English (the ones on Saturday WILL be better)
- To be disappointed that this semi-final is nowhere near as good
- To be even more fluent in Russian with the snippets at the end of the postcards (with words such as Welcome, Hi, Music and Round loaf of bread)
- To be glad The Toppers from the Netherlands aren't wearing their original choice of LED covered suits

If you notice that some songs stand out (Sweden, Bosnia, UK) so people might like the change and vote for them. Songs drawn later usually do better too, so Norway, Ukraine, UK and Spain will benefit from this. The odds are all over the place at the moment, so it's best to see on the day, but with the juries voting, it's anyone's guess who will win!

We can't vote for it though, so it's not our opinion that counts. There is stuff much worse in the final. We are definitely not going to come last. We will get points from a lot of countries. The people who have said we will come last won't hear the end of it from me.

I love how some people seem to think that we will win it now that they have introduced the new voting system.

We have a chance. In the past, juries have massively favoured the UK and ballads and the fact it will say Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Diane Eve Warren under the title is a great benefit. The fact that Andrew will get his face on screen for a few minutes is good for televoters too, as is the fact that she's sung her song on TV in over 20 countries. Off the top of my head she's done Life and Cooking in Holland, the national selections of Bosnia&Herzegovina, Russia, Ukraine and Malta to name a few, a Spanish Eurovision preview show, Polish Strictly Come Dancing and Swedish breakfast TV. Her song has had massive airplay on MTV Russia, which can be received in the countries surrounding Russia and 100,000 copies of her single were given away with OK Russia magazine. She's brilliant live, and she has 2009's must-have accessory: a violin. It's not just the voting system that has made me massively confident, it's all these other factors.

Speaking of voting...

Wow, what a load of crap that was.
1) That Norwegien song was terrible. Just.. terrible. Also I want to punch the guy who sings it in the face. It's a farce how many points they got.
2) Our song was ****. What the **** was that all about? The lyrics were absolutely dreadful and it was in no way the 5th best song in the competition.

The real winner for me tonight was Greece. Loved their song. I agree with the decisions to have Turkey, Azerbaijan & Iceland in the top 5 - but Norway and the UK? Terrible.
