Region code
0 - Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set.
1 - Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada), United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States); U.S. territories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territories_of_the_United_States); Bermuda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda)
2 - Western and Central Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe); Western Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Asia); Egypt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egypt), Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan), South Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa), Swaziland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swaziland); United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom), Turkey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey), French overseas territories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_overseas_territories)
3 - Southeast Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeast_Asia); South Korea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Korea); Taiwan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan); Hong Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong)
4 - Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia); Oceania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania); Central (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America) and South America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_America); Caribbean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean); Mexico (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico)
5 - Ukraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine), Belarus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus), Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia), Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa), Central (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Asia) and South Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asia), Mongolia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolia), North Korea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea).
6 - China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China), Hong Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong)
7 - Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screener) copies of MPAA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPAA)-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia))
8 - International venues such as aircraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft), cruise ships (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise_ship), etc.
ALL - Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player. Hope that helps.

Yes, if you are in the UK, a region 2 DVD will work on your player.

You cannot play DVDs with other regions, i.e. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, unless you have a multi-region player. You can usually check if your player is multi-region by looking at its rear (back) side. There should be a globe sign which says "ALL" or "0". Otherwise, it would just show "2", which means it only plays region 2 and all-region DVDs.

Hope that wasn't too confusing :P It's always wise to check what region a DVD is before buying it.
