http://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2008/12/19/windows-7-pre-beta-build-7004/
Scott Wylie, Microsoft's New Zealand Director of Development and Platform Strategy, wrote today on his blog about his experience installing a pre-beta build of Windows 7 on his home laptop.
It is interesting to note that the pre-beta build of Windows 7 installed on his home laptop seems to be build 7004, which if the term "pre-beta" is accurate would indicate that Windows 7 beta one will be some build number higher than 7004. On the blogosphere the general consensus has been that beta one would be build 7000.0.081212-1400 which the following screen shot from Scott's laptop could indicate is inaccurate.
http://blogs.msdn.com/blogfiles/scottwylie/WindowsLiveWriter/OncearoundtheblockwithWindows7_B7AD/W7Desktop_2.jpg
According to Windows 7 News the build shown above is 7004.0.081203-1830 which would indicate that this build was created on December 3rd at 18:30, this build could be from the Release Candidate (RC) branch. We therefore could still see build 7000.0.081212-1400 as the beta which would have been built on December 12th at 14:00.
As I quoted James O'Neill (Microsoft) saying earlier today, “Those who know aren’t talking and those who talk don’t know” .
Earlier today the Windows 7 homepage included a link to download the Windows 7 beta although the link unfortunately didn't work and has since been removed. I still believe we'll have to wait until after Steve Ballmer's CES keynote before we'll be able to download the beta.
Interesting.

Lol :P The only thing that makes it look ugly is the start orb, it just doesn't look right there. Hopefully they will replace it with a bigger one so part of it is over the top of the startbar like in vista.
i'm running build 6801 and its more stable than xp and vista put together which is looking good for a pre beta release

No. It's going to need 80GB of ram, at least 23YB of disc space and 43 graphics cards.

No, Microsoft are all about moving the market forword, and thats what they did with Vista.
xp was
64mb ram min and 128reconmened.
with vista they did 1GB reconemend 2..
you see, thats how they're moving the market forword, building somethign that requires alot.

Nope it can run fine on a 512mb laptop so Id say Microsoft will say 512MB min and 1.5GB recommended.

from rumours, i hear they want to make it 4GB ram..
but if they do it 512mb min then it's just going back down to the old age, i'd still say their going to move us forword.

well I run on 4gb of ram and I think that is just about right. I see computers running vista on less and it just doesn't seem enough. 4GB doesn't cost much these days, infact it really should be the norm.
You may be able to run in on 512mb with a large paging file instead but you won't be able to run other programs such as photoshop very well.

WHAT!?!? They arent delibratly going to make the OS use up all of the computers resources. Ideally they would want it as compact and easy to run as possible.
You're making little sense.

it's a beta? BETA means test phases.. It's what they did with Vista..
They released it as a test, tehn they bumped up the specs by a heck of a lot..
it ran on 256mb when the first BETA was out...
edit: Infact, it's not even a beta, it's a PRE beta.
7000 is most likely going to be the beta. You fail to understand how business works, let me explain in a simpler way so that even you know what I'm talking about.
Microsoft employee 1: So we get most of our sales off Windows?
Microsoft employee 2: YAH.
Microsoft employee 1: We need to think of ways to sell more copy's of windows, because that means we will make more money.
Microsoft employee 2: I have an idea, people are starting to buy netbooks so we should make a version of windows that runs on netbooks.
Microsoft employee 1: *** is a netbook?
Microsoft employee 2: Its like a laptop but it has less ram, crap graphics and a smaller screen.
Microsoft employee 1: But doesn't vista run on netbooks?
Microsoft employee 2: NAH.
Microsoft employee 1: So unless we want to lose out on sales we need to make an OS that will run on 1GB of ram?
Microsoft employee 2: YAH.
1 YEAR LATER
Microsoft employee 2: Okay, we have made Windows 7 and it can run on a 1GB netbook
What do you think happens next? is it..
Microsoft employee 1: I know lets make it use 3.5GB of ram for fun lol
Microsoft employee 2: k lol
or
Microsoft employee 1: Lets replace the start bar with a super bar.
To anyone else viewing the thread, Sorry to explain it in a really dumb way.

Not much,
Log out/Sleep buttons have been merged into something called a "power button"
http://www.tehupload.com/uploads/540342155f778a0001.png
You can change what action the power button does
http://www.tehupload.com/uploads/3580d78eb975926004.png
This is different from 6801, but it might have been updated in 6936
http://www.tehupload.com/uploads/90983d78eb97592005.png
Border has been added round the edges of the drawings in paint
http://www.tehupload.com/uploads/86162155f778a01002.png
This wasn't like that in 6801 but it might be from 6956 or 6936

I didn't try the 6956 build so some of these things might have been added between 6081 and 6956.

You can just extract the ISO and run install.exe if you want to. XP drivers won't work on it, but the setup will check for new drivers online if you ask it to.

No, actually, because Windows 7 is packed with new features (the taskbar is one example) and Snow Leopard has no new features, no new looks, just a total stability boost, which IMO isn't needed anyway but it's good they are doing it. It's good Microsoft is getting better too, Windows 7 really looks quite something ;)

The latter Jamesy ;)
I must admit I have been using windows 7 for a few days now and was shocked at how good the compatibility is. As people have said it is basically vista 1.5 so all vista drivers work flawlessly with it, and even some XP drivers (as I found with my wireless card).
The main issues I have are still the typical microsoft "NOT QUIET" execution. Things like the search indexing become too obvious when watching HD blue ray movies off of my HD as it starts to skip due to the search indexing, fixed by killing the search index process. I just feel they should make things like the search indexing process start when they really know the system is not under much strain, rather than "Mouse isn't moving... index faster".
Gaming performance is still at Vista's level in my personal opinion. I get a good 30 FPS drop on CS: S from around 100 constant (XP) to around 60-70 on Vista with a low FPS config (based on a 24 slot deathmatch) - could be drivers though as there are no "real" 7 drivers.
I'm undecided, but even when 7 is fully released I will most likely always have a dual boot available to run games (those that don't need DX11/10). I feel microsoft has a long way to go for gamers, and those that like high performance.

Everyone steals from everyone else in technology, Microsoft just does it a lot (I'm not complaining though, because a lot of companies wouldn't be where they are today if this wasn't true).

Do you even know anything about OS X? OS X had dashboard with widgets, Microsoft had a sidebar with gadgets. Widgets and gadgets do exactly the same thing and are coded pretty much the same. If you are on vista go to-
Start
Right click on computer
Click Manage
Click disk managment from the left window
On the biggest partition that is allready there, right click on it and select shrink.
http://www.tehupload.com/uploads/58912d57ebd1d21_1.png
On the window that appears set the "Amount of space to shrink" to 30,000MB (if you have over a 200GB harddrive you should be okay setting it to around 60,000MB-70,000MB)
http://www.tehupload.com/uploads/8786673da1c2925_1.png
After it is done you should see something saying "Free space" right click on it and select "New simple volume", then keep clicking next until its finished.
You should have a new partition that you can install Windows 7 on.
When installing Windows 7 you will need to select the partition called "New volume".

Yeah there is, you don't need a disk but its easier to use one. If you want to do it on a disk, insert a blank disk, go to the Windows 7 ISO file, double click on it and it will give you the option to burn to a disk.
If you want to do it with out a disk download MagicISO (http://magiciso.com), open the Windows 7 ISO file with MagicISO and click extract. Then go to the place you extracted it to and run install.exe.
Then when installing do not choose "Upgrade", choose "Custom (advanced)" and when prompted to select the new partition you made. :)

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4622249/Windows_7_beta_build_6.1.7000.0_Activator_By_Orbit 30_scripted_by to activate or http://rapidshare.com/files/180760497/W--indo-ws_7-act-iva-te---er.EXE.html if you don't want to use a torrent..
To remove the desktop watermark and the send feedback links use http://rapidshare.com/files/180761670/6.1.7000.0_Plus_Patch_v2_Orbit30.exe.html When you run the exe file you need to choose options "D", "E" then "G" :)

from rumours, i hear they want to make it 4GB ram..
That's bull, sorry.
Most laptops and desktops have 2-3GB of ram, and to have and above is just utter ********. It's nearing release every day, with the fact the release could be at the end of this year and computers haven't progressed far enough.
Yeah there is, you don't need a disk but its easier to use one. If you want to do it on a disk, insert a blank disk, go to the Windows 7 ISO file, double click on it and it will give you the option to burn to a disk.
If you want to do it with out a disk download MagicISO (http://magiciso.com (http://magiciso.com/)), open the Windows 7 ISO file with MagicISO and click extract. Then go to the place you extracted it to and run install.exe.
Then when installing do not choose "Upgrade", choose "Custom (advanced)" and when prompted to select the new partition you made. :)
I have 3 700mb Discs. T-T; How big is it?

The beta will go onto MSDN tonight for public release on friday.
Windows 7 Build 7000 Beta 1 x86: 2.43GB
Windows 7 Build 7000 Beta 1 x64: 3.15GB
the sizes
Tonight we are specifically announcing that Windows 7 has reached a very important milestone in its development cycle: the beta milestone. And starting this week, the Windows 7 Beta will be made available to Windows enthusiasts interested in beta testing – giving people a chance to check out Windows 7 for themselves.
As of tonight, MSDN and TechNet Subscribers will have access to the Windows 7 Beta. Starting January 9th – everyone else will be able to go to the Windows 7 page on Windows.com and download the Windows 7 Beta. The Windows 7 Beta will be available in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. The Windows 7 Beta will be download-only – we will not be sending physical media out.
and Dave is correct:
And finally, yes, the build I wrote about back in December is indeed the official Windows 7 Beta and the version that everyone will get this week. Indeed, Microsoft created this build a month ago, on December 12, 2008, and then tested it for 10 days to ensure that it met the quality bars required to ship as the Beta. You can see this date for yourself in the full build string which is, in the x86 (32-bit version), 7000.x86fre.winmain_win7beta081212-1400.
