Ok so i am getting a new computer for xmas
Basic Specs:
Processor: AMD Phenom X4 9500 quad core
O.S: Windows Vista Home Premium
RAM: 8GB
Anyway i cannot list the full specs of it as i am not allowed it until thursday pmsl.. Now my question! When i was allowed to check it out i put a new graphics card in it - No problems when installing and it works fine. - I was checking the specs for the graphics card earlier and theu reccomend the power supply is 350-watt or greater. This is where im confused LOL The PSU in the computer atm has an output max of 250-watt.. Obviously thats not going to be enough and i don't want it to burn out! ;l - So my question is, If i was to put a 400-watt PSU in it on xmas day will it be ok? Or should i expect it to blow?! If not i will just buy a newer card i guess!
Thanks in advance (:
if you buy a decent one, it will be fine ;)

haha well it wasn't a cheap card at all! :) - However i don't think it will manage with the PSU thats in the computer at the moment ;/
well he is right, since 8gb ram is well, pointless.
EDIT:
ALSO, i mean as long as you get a decent PSU

Inless you get a 64BIT OS
With the specs you mentioned i doubt it would have booted with a 250 watt PSU.

The manufacturer of the graphics card are ATI - I don't like nividia. And The PSU manufacturer being.. Delta Electronics
ALSO, i mean as long as you get a decent PSU
Well the point of this thread being.. Will my system be ok if i purchase a better PSU?

yeah its a 64BIT os
With the specs you mentioned i doubt it would have booted with a 250 watt PSU.
And yeah it did, no BSOD or anything like that, It worked fine. Although i only had it on for around 10 mins. - Im going to go buy the PSU tomorrow i was just comparing notes

ok right im not sure about your graphics card as you havnt told us the model, however i would seriously consider getting a new PSU such as one made by OCZ, Corsair or Coolermaster etc as with a PSU like your current one, there is a VERY strong chance it could blow up..... and maybe take all of your other componants with it.

Yeah sorry for lack of information there and thats what i was thinking - If i do upgrade my PSU its not going to blow any components is it? - This is why i made this thread yano.. Is it safe to upgrade the PSU so to speak?

Yep, it safe to change the PSU, and no it wont blow any componants providing its a decent PSU :) just make sure you change it to be on the safe side, rather than take a chance :)

these are only a few i can recommend (just used ebuyer as it was the site i was browsing at the time) Id say go with 500W as it should be enough for your computer, and allow room for future graphic card updates if you wish.

Yes looks alright,
but I'm guessing the RAM is 800mhz?
You would see a much better performance by getting about 3 or 4gb 1300mhz RAM and using a 32 bit operating system.
Also don't go cheap on the graphics card, that looks like a great system so far, if your going with ATI get a 4850 HD, very good performance for the price.

I have 8GB and it comes very helpful.
For example you can completley turn off the page file so that your system becomes more responsive.
No matter what anybody says, Size > Speed.
If you are a computer enthusiast there's no such thing as overkill.

I agree. I used to turn of the page file on Windows XP computers that had 2GB or more. Increases performance a fair bit.

I would've gone a little higher than 500w.
Know what graphics card you are getting? ATI aree great but don't let a personal bias steer you from nvidia, provided you don't buy some £50 cheap card that won't perform or survive the year then you will get a good lifetime out of it. With graphics cards you really get what you pay for and looking at the current specs of your computer I'd suggest surfing the net and going for a decent card upwards of £140. And don't go to pcworld or somewhere like that. Go to dabs or ebuyer, etc.
