Licensing an Anime.

Hey, I've seen people on other forums complaining about animes being licensed. What does this exactly mean

While Anime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime) has been licensed by its Japanese owners for use outside of Japan since at least the 1960s, the practice became well-established in the United States in the late 1970s/early 1980s, when such TV series as Gatchaman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatchaman) and Captain Harlock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Harlock) were licensed from their Japanese parent companies for distribution in the US market, often with fairly dramatic changes to the original concepts and storylines. The trend towards American distribution of anime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime) continued into the 1980s with the licensing of titles such as Voltron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltron) and the 'creation' of new series such as Robotech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotech) through use of source material from several original series.
In the early 1990s, several companies began to experiment with licensing less children-oriented material. Some, such as A.D. Vision (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.D._Vision), and Central Park Media (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Park_Media) and its imprints, achieved fairly substantial commercial success and went on to become major players in the now very lucrative American anime market. Others, such as AnimEigo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnimEigo), achieved more limited success. Many companies created directly by Japanese parent companies did not do as well, most releasing only one or two titles before folding their American operations.

From that i think its that Anime can only be classed as anime if its licensed under a japanese company who are legally allowed to do so, some of these include:

Because licensed animes, are licensed Paul.
Their copyright laws go a bit further than ours. They will destroy us if we use licensed animes for subs :)

basically when an anime is licensed it means a company has bought rights to create a dub of the show in there region.

For example. Funimation bought the rights for Dragonball Z from Toei. So they could make an english dub and release it in the US.

Some subbing groups only tend to sub the show until the series are licensed im sure death note was stopped and another group took over.

obviously groups still carry on like dattebayo because the series was years away. obviously DB are stopping in january but bleh.

What has it got to do with subbing though.
Why cant they sub it anymore and even if a anime is licensed why are people still subbing it if it is licensed.

because some companys let it slide and some dont. Funimation for example email fansubs and tell them to stop it or they will take them to court. but other series liek one piece which are 10 years ahead they allow. subbing groups also stop because they dont want to get sued lol.

It means that theres a chance fansubbers will be requested to stop subbing it. Which sucks.
