In the first half on 2008!
The Helsinki based virtual goods operator Sulake saw a profitable first half in 2008. According to Kauppalehti, net profits were around 400 000 euros. The revenues rose approximately 20% to 25,6 million euros for the first 6 months of 2008. Majority of the sales came from sale of virtual goods in Habbo Hotels world wide. According to the company, the annual growth for 2008 will be around 30%.
Credit crunch? What credit crunch! :P
To be honest I'm not "THAT" surprised really.

Well from this they certainly are NOT!
I would say the hotel who has the most user spending is:
.COM
.CO.UK
.CA
Don't know the rest :P
they'd make more if they made credits cheaper, because people would buy more than usual just because it's cheap.

If you think about it, most profits come from teenagers under the age of 16 (mainly); do you think people below that age actually know how it affects people?
That's why they just spend, spend, spend. :p

It's suprising how they can make that much, comparing to what habbo was sold for

Habbo used to be owned by Dee Edwards, who sold it for 1 million pounds to Sulake.

About '99/'00h. They created the game in 2001, integrated it with their mobile disco thing... or was that Daisy's idea again? :S
Meh well done to em, they work hard.

Hmm that much profit and they want to remove a small VIP from fansites? Pathetic.

So, they stop fansites selling VIP because they are taking there money yet they get $38 million in half a year. ******* rediculous.

The amount of net profit the business makes has nothing to do with the VIP situation. -.-

Yeah i agree $38 Million a year and your moaning over a fansite who probs pick up less then £10,000 for a year.
Everyone should have a strike don't buy any credits or anything.
Make them listen to us. They say they listen to our ideas but they don't
they probably have an old email address which is full of thousands of unread messages.

Mobiles disco was Sampo and aapos AFAIK, and yeah they did integrate it to make the habbo we know today.

What was their reasoning behind it though? I assumed/read somewhere it had something to do with money they were losing out on because people spent it on VIP..
I bet he's looking back and saying "if i only kept it for a few more years" ...... :P
Honestly.... if it werent backed by a professional company I dont think it would have gotten very far. Sulake put HEAPS of money into Habbo to make it what it is today :x

Im suprised they've made that much really, considering habbo is sort of dying out. Not many people buy credits like they used to.

I said all along that Fansites weren't robbing Sulake of money, it's because fansites are making money out of Sulake (Directly or Indirectly) and because Sulake can't trust every fansite with the money, how do Sulake know that our payment systems are safe? Some sites could use subscription services like Jamster did and cost them £2 every text or we could run off with Credit Card details, and they don't want to be involved in that at all even if they aren't officially affiliated with us. It's most probably a decision by their lawyer's so they cannot be blamed for anything.
Traditionally in times of recession it is normal that people spend more money on entertainment, for example the video gaming industry has been on the increase a lot unlike things like the car industry which are dying. Habbo just about falls under Entertainment but there's little evidence to suggest that teenagers pocket money is going down because of the credit crunch, therefore people will still spend the usual and because Habbo is always expanding, they then make more profit.
Anyone who knows anything about running a business would not see this as a reason to make credits cheaper, just because a firm is making a good profit does not mean it can ease off and pass the fortunes onto the customers, it makes economic sense to keep everything where it is atm as it is clearly doing well, if anything they could gamble rising the prices.
Hardly any of you seem to view Habbo/Sulake as a business, I just can't believe you expect them to lower prices because they're doing well? :S
Edit: Has anyone else realised that Habbo hasn't passed the 2.5% tax cuts onto us? They haven't lowered their prices at all so they're actually making more profit out these tax cuts.

Oh Jordy, you seem to forget that there are people here who always blame Habbo and do not look at them as a business. It's nice that you teach, but lots don't learn :p

Somebody might have pointed this out but their profit was actually only €400,000 for the first 6 months of 2008. That's ok for a company the size of Sulake but I wouldn't say it's great.
Actually, if out of €25,600,000 they only had €400,000 profit...
that's what, 2%?
They'd be better off putting their money in a high interest savings account than putting it into Sulake. That's a bad thing.

It's 8F8! :o
And yeah, it's only 400,000 Euros profit... Not good at all for a company like Sulake really. I remember seeing a value of $77m for 2006 - whether that wa revenue or profit I don't know - but it's a lot less now than it was back then.

I was looking through this thread waiting to see if someone would say that in hope that I could feel clever by saying, but alas you got there first. I completely agree, €400,000 is not a lot of net profit considering their gross profit. Not a lot at all.

The NET profit isn't too good, but NET profit is minus tax, wages, all expenses, perhaps even re-investment in some cases. Still though, £400,000 into Aapo/Sampo's pocket isn't as much as I would expect, with the millions they get in revenue, they either have a high spending budget per EU hotel, or ridiculously high wages. Though I'd assume a hefty portion of that revenue was spent on marketing, as Habbo can be seen advertised on many major websites these days, they need to pull back the numbers on-line they once had at peak times. These days they can peak 10,000 at 6pm on the UK hotel, which I have to say, is higher than I've seen it this year.

qft, i mean making profit would make you think that prices are right, making a loss would make you think prices are to high and need to go down
Such a successful company
Whoever thought of selling virtual furniture on an online game is a god dam genius, well at least in some ways. Anyone could of thought of it, but nobody ever went forwards with the idea. It is one of only a few companys that can make money from selling things that do not exist.
Doesent surprise me either. Parents will buy their 11 year olds anything, even if its not real.

Well they're not really paying for something that's "not real", they're paying for the entertainment.
And as people have pointed out already, that's a surprisingly low net profit for such a (seemingly) large company.

That's around £20million right? Well that isn't as much as you think it is as companies just based in the UK can make 100's of millions of profit, you'd except worldwide companies to be making 10x that.

They also have to pay for rent and bills for the offices, advertising and loads more.
