I'd say upgrade from Linux if I'm honest, I've the same Netbook, and it works out a whole lot better.

You could always revert back with your Linpus DVD.

I had this issue too, except my fix was to go to Windows XP.
Have you tried one of the other MSN clients? If you Google for "MSN alternative for Fedora Core" (FC is what AA1's Linux is based on) you should find some form of alternative.

Or, according to Google, if you can work out where the "Live Update" feature is, keep doing that and you should end up with some form of update which will allow the built-in Messenger to work with Micro$oft's protocols for Messenger. I can't really tell you how because like I said, I don't have Linux on my AA1 anymore.

When I used Ubuntu I used a messenger called Kopete. To this day I've never seen a better MSN client.
