Just to verify, did anyone else get a letter from sky broadband / BPI saying that if you download anymore then they will take you to court? I got one this morning, I heard they were doing this ages ago, But never believed it, Id scan the letters but my scanner isnt working.

It does. Unless the ISP connects to the torrent and checks the IP then they won't know what data you are downloading.

What I cant understand is that its so easy to find illegal films, music, software etc, yet the government / ISP's don't block the web pages, remember we heard that ISP's were blocking a Wikipedia page because it contained child porn, yet they don't block torrent sites.

If they want people to stop downloading then block the websites from being accessed.

If anyone goes on google and searches what they want with 'free' after it chances are it will direct them too a torrent site

Personally, I think its pathetic. The music industry makes enough money, and now they want to make even more by adding ridiculous fines on.

edit// it also winds me up when they still moan at you for downloading songs you own! What if you have a CD thats damaged and you want the songs off of it. If you download it then surely thats fine as you have paid for a copy of the songs and you aren't getting around any protection (so your not breaking copyright act or w.e).

If you want two copies you have to buy two.

It's illegal to rip a CD to your computer.

It's illegal to rip a CD to your computer.

Aren't there certain CD's you can rip to be used as backups?

Even if you do what I mentioned before, the chances of getting caught are ever so small.

They deserve to fine you as you are illegally obtaining their work, if you made a picture and someone stole it and gave it away, you wouldn't be sitting there all happy because you have another 2 pictures would you?

If anyone goes on google and searches what they want with 'free' after it chances are it will direct them too a torrent siteFor the recent Wikipedia block that wasn't the ISPs fault, even though it was the ISPs blocking the page, most ISPs use the Internet Watch Foundation (http://www.iwf.org.uk/) filtering and that blocks all child pornography for them, it was the IWF who decided to block it.

ISPs aren't here to police the internet, the only reason they're sending people letters or giving out details to law firms is because the government is forcing them and because there is a court order demanding them to do this, Virgin Media is taking the effort to block all torrents later this year however.

Hm, I'm still downaloding anyways, It was probably just a scaremonger.Well yes you're right but I'd personally call it a day now as it's likely they'll watch your downloads more vigorously as they're now 'onto' you, whether we agree with what the music industry is doing or not, I'd just be grateful that you've been warned and choose to take their advice before you get the real letter demanding a vast sum or court action. Just get friends to download for you but I'd advise against continuing.

It's simple really. ISP's make money off you so they aren't going to block all torrent sites because people would just swich to another ISP and the ISP that blocked torrent sites would lose money.

The main problem is that ISPS dont care about anything except money. They are not there to make you happy, give you good deals, save YOU money. They are simply there to maximise profits. If they block off a website then you are likely to leave or you could just change your dns. (opendns.net)

ISPs will only send the letters out if they are told to by either:

a) The government
b) The record label

And only if they threat to:

a) Fine them
b) Sue them
c) Send them to jail

It is the main reason why it is so much easier to get away with downloading movies than music (if you donwload music alot then make sure the file names are disquised and dont say: musicfile1rippedfromnow45.mp3 as it will get picked up!)

To be fair dont moan at the ISPs they prefer it if you download otherwise you'll just downgrade your internet package.

My names in the title of this thread so I'm drawn to posting in it.
It could be a fake, maybe some guy was sending 'em to everyone in the area in the hope that some of the people where Sky customers...
On the other hand, it might not be...

Keep downloading until something proper happens. But to be safe, tone down the amount you download for the time being so they forget about you (if it's real) and then you can start downloading again :P
