Looking to jailbreak my iPhone. I'm running Windows Vista atm and wondering if it's hard to jailbreak it using Windows Vista because I heard it's really easy using a Mac.

Also wondering if I will lose anything from my phone, or if it will suddenly damage something.

+REP for helpfulness

The program - QuickPwn - Will give you the details.. Google 'Jailbreaking Iphone 3g 2.2' Or youtube it
Use PWNAGETOOL if you want to unlock the 3G in the future

In case you haven't noticed the trend, when Apple releases a new iPhone / iPod touch firmware, it has a tendency to fall to the jailbreakers at mind-boggling breakneck speed. QuickPwn and PwnageTool have now both been updated to support 2.2, though there's a critical note in here from the iphone-dev team: if you have any interest in unlocking your iPhone 3G in the near future, only use PwnageTool, not the more painless QuickPwn. You've been warned!

Will it be easy for a "not so computer savvy as the rest of you" guy like myself? :P

Yeah, just plug in your iPod and follow the steps and it does everything else for you.

Will it ruin anything on my iPhone or will the backups that iTunes does save that from happening?

You have to start with a clean install, you can't use a backup or anything.

But then can I transfer the apps that I have purchased?

I'm a noob when it comes to this but I managed. All you have to do is restore your iPhone (it will keep everything backed up including apps), jailbreak it and then sync everything back as usual from the saved backup including apps.
It is scary thinking that something could happen but I had no problems at all so you shouldn't either! :D

The main two are the new apps and theming capabilities, but once you do jailbreak you discover more things that are helpful for you. And if you aren't happy, all you have to do is restore and everything goes back the way it should be...
