yeah, but my band mates go to uconn which is about 3 hours away from here, maybe more. its no big deal though, we've been doing stuff while we've seen each other and we're going to have more than enough material to record an LP over summer vacation. we're sending it to every record label we can think of lol.

As far as drum kits go, here are some good brands
- Premier (thats what I have, only in the uk now though)
- Ludwig
- Pearl
- Tama
And for cymbals
- Zildjian
- Sabian (just about same thing as zildjians so just go with whatever is better priced)
- Paiste

yeah dude, its fun. ive been in a few officially and unofficially. people rip on drummers sometimes but they really can make or break your band as ive learned. we hate to say it because hes one of our best friends but our former drummer (now bassist) was terrible. at least on bass his mess ups are unnoticeable lol.
hah yeah cause all bassists do is hit a few chords and bob their head back and forth :P
I wanna learn to play guitar too so I can play some metallica and **** like that but i dont have the patience to learn everything

haha well everyone knows bass is least important, though you can be a really good bassist and add a lot to songs. my roommate saw metallica last thursday lol, and he got kicked out of an ac/dc concert 2 months ago for smoking a joint in madison square garden, he didnt even see them go on stage.
anyway, imma be honest, heavy metal is fun to learn when you first start cause its easy as hell. it's just drop d then bar bar bar bar bar lol. ive been playing guitar 6 years, you kinda go in phases. after a while you get sick of learning other peoples' songs, unless they're really complicated and interesting to learn. ive been experimenting with chords and effects and stuff, ive basically only been writing for the past 2 years or so. but yeah, learning multiple instruments is awesome, cause i can fully compose songs myself, especially with garage band.
get a beginner's guitar. they can go for really cheap, i know some go as low as $100 with amp.

I had the chance to see Metallica when they were down in Columbus with my friends, but it was a Sunday and my parents were all, "you wont be home til 3 in the morning blah blah school blah blah blah' i was like. thisll be my only chance as far as I know of to see my favorite band, my dad just goes "theyll be other chances" :eusa_wall:eusa_wall:eusa_wall:eusa_wall:eusa_wall
bummer gettin kicked out of ac/dc, such a great band.
once I get some latin percussion blocks to mess around with and make different beats Im gonna start making some of my own beats and stuff. but til then im working on chop suey and i dont wanna stop (ozzy).

oh thats so crappy. im kinda lucky cause my dad is a music fanatic, even when i was younger the only reason he would ever let me go out on a school night would be for a concert lol. one time he let me go out in 8th grade on a sunday night to see godsmack acoustic (never really was a fan but it was a free ticket) and he would take me to concerts like r.e.m. and stuff on school nights. but if i wanted to see a movie on a wednesday it'd be a no .
thats sick. im horrible at drums, i can keep time etc but i dont really have a set to practice on, though i would love to have one. i make faux beats on garage band, but obviously thats not the same as actually playing.
yeah we have a myspace. our EP is available for download if you scroll down. you can read our bio if you want (its a bit ridiculous) but in short, it was originally just my two other friends who wrote the majority of the songs in their sophomore year, so all of these songs are incredibly short, unprofessional, and immature. i joined in my senior year in high school. i was originally bass, then switched to lead guitar when we got another bassist, but then his job took over all his time so he kinda got kicked out. we did 2 guitarists and a drummer for a while but we realized our drummer cant keep time for crap, so i learned drums and he learned bass haha. so anyway, i play drums and guitar on all these tracks, but i only wrote/sing one of them on the myspace ("how the middle child lost his soul").
www.myspace.com/checkeredrecta
and a live performance at a battle of the bands a year ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLDK92_cdNI), i'm the first singer. (you can see our drummer's problems)
btw, the band name wasnt my idea.
Not a bad band.

Most sets dont come with cymbals or hardware for that matter. So it could be best to buy a shell pack (just the drums) than buy the hardware (cymbal stands, snare stands, tom stands, bass pedal, hi hat stand, all that stuff.) than buy some cymbals. But when your buying cymbals, dont be afraid to spend a little more cash than expected when you go for cymbals becuase if you buy cheap cymbals such as Wuhan, than they have a higher chance of cracking/dented a lot sooner than some of the higher up models. But basically anything from zildjian, sabian, paiste will last you quite a while.

a set like that would be good for beginners, or maybe one with 2 monted toms would be better. But nevertheless for a decent set for a beginner would cost between 200 and 450 euros. Plus cymbals and hardware with cost at least around 300 more euros.

well, it depends on the sound quality of the camera, but if you wanted it to sound good, you'd definitely need mics. it would be best with two (one in front of the bass drum, one sort of under the snare) but you could do it with just one low down near the bass and under the snare.

400$?! are those specifically designed for drums or something? there's decent mics for 20 bucks on amazon haha. although its not as easy to record as it seems, you have to play around with adjusting volume to get a good sense of it, but thats true with all mics.
personally, i'm a fan of lo-fi. i like a bit of clipping. even when i make computer generated beats, ill usually put a little distortion on just to make it sound like home-recorded.

haha I guess they mustve been top of the line. It was a pack of like 5 mics for different drums though so idk. I know nothing about mics so I would just need like 2 smallish micswith clips to put them on drums?

haha basically. im not a recording expert or anything i just have some experience and good equipment, so the best thing would be for you to get two mics, clips if youve got them, and a computer or whatever you want to record with and just play around with it. find what you like and what works etc, cause systems of recordings vary so much with what youre recording with and how you want it to sound.
when i was producing my friends' bands' album, we literally used duct tape haha. we put one mic on the ground in front of the bass, which was easy, then we skillfully hung the second mic with duct tape from the snare and the bass, haha.
ok I'll look into getting those, thanks

those specific ones go into sound mixers:
http://en.woodbrass.com/images/woodbrass/BEHRINGER+PMP3000.JPG
you see the 8 black circles with the three holes at the top? those mics plug into there. if you click the wire picture on the page you showed me and zoom in you'll see they fit. now, obviously a mixer is a whole separate thing you have to buy. but many mics can be plugged right into the computer. if you get these mics (http://www.amazon.com/Nady-SP-4C-NADY-Dynamic-Microphone/dp/B00009W40D/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1233803682&sr=8-2) (you can see the different plug), and then get an adapter that can convert it to the mic plug on the computer (they arent expensive) you'll be able to record. the problem is most computers only have one mic plug, so you would either need a mixer or a splitter.
those look good, might pick a couple up.

Hey,
I actually do alot of band recording and i would advise,
SM58's for Vox
SM57 for snare drums/ guitar
With guitar you have 2 options. Straight line out then in editing process add reverb ect. Or a nice around 1 inch away. I prefer this method as the sound is alot lot more realistic. AKG c1000s for drum over heads i would have x 2 overheads 1 for right 1 for left. Bass drum i would go with a shenhizer one, not sure about what model i use but i fond theres better than shure. For toms on drums i would either go with some SM57's again or go for some drum mics from shure. Bass i would personally take a line out for that. I always fine with a bass as the frequency is so so low it is a bastered to record properly using mics.
On the vox if your doing live SM58 as i said but if your justt recording i would use a large diaphragm mic such as some of the RODE mics and then have a pop shield. Keyboard if you have any do a line out again.
This is the most basic of setups and would do great for live and recording. If you just wanna record you can add another few SM57's in if you want it to sound better like under snare ect. Mixer wise i myself would still go analogue. I know digital should be the way to go but i myself think analogue produces a better sound. Then for recording straight into a Motu or a m- aduio audio interface and record on something like protools.
You can then do stuff like reverb it, compress and eq then once full done master it.
For a 58 your looking arround £70 - £80. a c1000s around £80 - £100. The 57 will be arround £80 as well. Then if your going rode for vocals its around £200 for one of there nice large diaphram mics.
If you want any more on this please do pm or talk here.

Thanks man.
Glad my knowledge comes in useful now and again. I do music technology as well as doing stuff like sound for concerts out of school so i know a fair bit on mic choices ect.

I use a Gretsch Catalina Club Mod drumkit. I got it a few weeks ago because I seriously love small, 4 piece drumkits (bass drum, snare, rack tom and floor tom) and I really wanted a smaller rack tom that;
1) could be attached to a cymbal/boom stand via the GPS suspension system rather than coming out of the bass drum, because it means I can place my ride cymbal over the bass drum if you get me? :)
and 2) could be nearly as low as my snare drum because I find it easier & more comfortable to play when it's like that.
It's only my second kit (my old was a CB starter kit haha) and I got it for £410 online. I didn't know much about Gretsch kits until I bought it, then I realised it was actually just a few places away from the bottom when it came to price range :P
http://www.drumkitsdirect.co.uk/images/GretschCatModBRGC.jpg
Pearl P902 Double-bass pedal (doesn't mean I'm good at it :P)
Zildjian ZBT Hi-Hats
18" Zildjian Crash ride
16" Zildjian ZXT Total China
16" Zildjian Bronze
I can't remember if the last one is correct, I bought it from my drum teacher & he used to use it as a kid and they've stopped making them apparently. It sounds amazing though :)
Sorry for the essay haha.
Also a quick question; what's the best place to get cases in the UK for my drumkit? I've tried the local music shops + google, but I can't find a bass drum case that's 22" by 20" :( And I can't afford to get them seperately, only in sets, so preferably I need cases that are designed for the kit?
Thanks.

Thats really a great kit you got, Im sure it sounds amazing. Yeah I love to play 4 piece sets. I actually just changed my set today to a 4 piece. 15" Rack 18" Floor with 24" Bass and 14" snare. Huge toms haha. As far as cases I dunno where to buy from in the UK cause Im american but remember that as far as gigging out and whatnot, hard cases are better because they protect your gear a lot better.
:O That guy's immense haha. Just watched his Sum 41 cover and about to watch his a7x covers :P

Yeah If you watch his newer covers he got endorsed by even more companies and now has a custom made kit. I think it sounds even better than his old yammy.

It didn't sound good until I got my drum teacher to tune them; I fail at tuning haha.
I remember seeing a Clash tribute band called Rebel Truce at a music venue in my area. I've never been a massive fan of them so I dunno much about their drummer, but when I saw Rebel Truce their drummer used such a big rack tom... It looked like a floor tom :O
Yeah I checked out some hardcases aswell as bags from Protection Racket, they both come close to £200 ($400 I think? :P). It's so lame :eusa_wall

Yeah Im not that great a tuning either so I have a uncle do it whos been drumming for 30 years. Actually his old kit I have :P Yeah thats the thing about cases, expensive as hell, but in the long run, you benefit a lot from having them. Oh yeah and if you take a pic of that zildjian you didnt know what it was, I might be able to tell you.

Yeah that is true in the long run. Unless you get a new kit after which is slightly bigger, meaning you've gotta splash out even more on new cases. I wish I was rich :P
Here's my kit aswell as the cymbal. I took of the cymbals earlier for band practice tomorrow and couldn't be bothered to put them back on yet, so I'll post another picture of it when's set up properly in the next couple of days.

Yeah I know, it sounds so amazing though :) It was a couple of hundred pounds I think.
I also have the snare drum that came with the kit, but I don't use it; I use a Yamaha metal one instead :)
Yeah some cymbals that arent so great line/brand, can sound amazing. I have a Zildjian ZXT 16" Thin Crash that sounds awesome. And even has a great bell.
You should use the other one as a side snare.

Ohhhh nice :) How much did it cost ya?
I've seen some cheap Stagg cymbals a music shop, they sound pretty good but I can't rely on them lasting very long at all.
Yeah I was thinking about that; when I get enough money and decide to get a new snare stand, I'll use my old one with the Gretsch snare and see what it's like to play with 2 snares :D For now I'll keep it spare incase my Yamaha breaks or w/e.
This is my kit when it's setup with cymbals;

Sorry if it seems like I'm bragging, I don't mean to lol
Not all all :P
Ill post my kit later.
I got the cymbal used for about $25.
If they sound good to you, go ahead and get the staggs. As long as you hit them with correct technique, they shouldnt end up cracking.

Hehe, funny I was just checking this thread today, and I've only just got around to getting a band together today.
Should be a while before we get any recordings done, gunna focus on gigging more than recording :)

I only have a 5-piece Stagg which is in the attic/landing. Not really enough space to play it :(.

You should convert your garage into a sound proof practice room to play them in. Or the attic... that'd be epic :P

Been a while since I've posted my gear and it's built up gradually over the past few years :)
Very happy with my setup now, just waiting for another guitar to be purchased then I'm all set.
I'll put it all in a big spoiler as there's quite a few images.
First, my main guitar - when I gig I mainly use this for the majority of the set
Fender Telecaster '72 Deluxe Re-issue.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q315/andrewfx_2006/Gear/DSCF9065.jpg?t=1322958320
This ones usually one of my back-up guitars, bought it for £250 and a very rare guitar 'Antoria' made a lot of guitars in the 70's as part of the company 'Ibanez'
Antoria New Yorker - going to put a new Seymore Duncan P90 in this in the next few weeks

Fender Stratocaster American Standard
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q315/andrewfx_2006/Gear/DSCF9062.jpg?t=1322958513
Now onto my amp
Got this head last month and I love it. Jet City 50 watts.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q315/andrewfx_2006/Gear/DSCF9066.jpg
I'm running the JCA50H through a custom built Zilla cab (check them out) with 3 V30 speakers in.
