Now by seeing the title of this thread, chances are you know exactly what it will be about. The end of the world prophecy.

If you don't know what I am on about, basically the Mayans calendar ends on that date and something massive will happen which will supposedly kill most of the population of the world. Last time it happened, it involved water. This time, it's ment to be earthquakes. Please vote in the poll whether you think this will happen or not, and post reasons why you have that view. I saw it in the newspaper the other day and it just made me wonder, even though I have heard about it many times before.

My view is I don't think this will happen because there has been many predictions before of the end of the world (remember y2k?) that haven't happened so far. Anyway, thanks for reading and please vote and post :D

There was about 20 cases reported of computers going down exactly on the 00:00 mark, but nothing big like predicted, like aeroplanes falling or nukes exploding

Nowhere does anything say about the world ending on this day, nothing happened last time and nothing will happen this time. The thing you're on about that predicted 9/11 is probably Nostradamus, I'm not even sure if that predicted it either. So no, the only thing that's going to happen is our solar system is going under the middle of the Milky Way, and solar flares will be at their most active as Jupiter and Saturn align. :)

Erm something happened to it and they had to shut it down for the winter (I think it used too much energy or something), they'll be resuming it in spring/summer I think so yay. I wanted them to do it in 08 but oh well. :P

I wasn't on about Nostradamus, although he did predict that. It said in the paper on the 2nd january that the Mayans predicted 9/11 aswell. I'm surprised they did.

The 2012 prediction is something that has been derived relatively recently from ancient Mayan predictions. December 21st 2012 is the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar. The calendar is completing it's thirteenth cycle and obviously people jump to the conclusion that this is going to be unlucky and what follows is the apocalypse etc etc. The Mayans themselves did not make such a prediction, scholarly individuals who should no better made assumptions in regard to the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar and have stirred up a hype about the world ending in 2012.

This is a load of ********, they didn't prophesize ANYTHING. They simply... stopped the calender at a certain date. Does it mean something happens then? No. We don't make calenders for our phones dating up to the year 2100 (or mine doesnt at least), does that mean the world will end then? According to my phone, it would appear so, and according to a mayan calender, it would appear its finishing 2012.

I don't think it will happen, but if it does, I'm prepared to change my decision when I'm dead. The only problem with these theories about the end of the world is that if this one doesn't come true, another one will pop up out of no where and take its place.
