Downing to hand in a transfer request

Sky Sports News has learnt Stewart Downing will hand Middlesbrough a transfer request on Monday.



The England international has been the subject of a bid from Tottenham in the January transfer window but a reported £6million figure fell well below Boro's valuation.


Spurs' approach was given short shrift by Boro chief executive Keith Lamb, who has branded the offer 'derisory'.
Downing and his representatives have yet to comment on the player's situation but Sky Sports News understands an official transfer request will be presented to Gareth Southgate and the club's board on Monday.
Southgate has been adamant in his stance that the wide man will not be sold but it would appear Downing is ready to test the club's resolve to keep him.


Downing signed a new five-year deal in February but now seems ready to quit his boyhood club for pastures new.

I think city are taking Chelsea's initial route when they got big bucks by buying English players such as Lampard, Cole, Bridge, Parker etc.

Downing is such an over rated player round here just because he's local. He continously blows hot and cold and doesn't track back as much as he should. I've never really rated him, so whoever buys him is welcome to him. We have a much better replacement in Adam Johnson who is not only skillful and can actually cross a ball - he has pace too.

Exactly, I dont want him at Spurs myself. Would be stupid to sign him, as he would come in the same fashion as Bentley - promising good things but never delivering.

but southgate said in an interview when he sold Yakubu that they don't want unsettled players at the club and that they would sell them for as much as possible. Perhaps the board are just going to continue pushing Spurs for the highest possible transfer fee.
