View Full Version : Question about alcohol..

So I've been drinking more since I got to university, though I never usually go overboard (except once or twice.. haha). Anywho, almost every time I drink, the next day, in the morning or about halfway through the day, or even later in the night I get a bad stomach ache, and have to go to the bathroom, and disgusting as this sounds, its almost like diarrhea. And it's not a hangover.. I've been hungover a few times, and it's not like that. I get the stomach ache even if I only had a little bit (for example yesterday I only had 3/4ths of a smirnoff ice and today i had a stomachache). I think it generally happens when I don't have much to eat before drinking, but it also happens when I eat (again, for example last night I had a small bowl of pasta right before the smirnoff). Does this happen to anyone else? None of my friends that i've asked seem to have this problem, and someone suggested its acid reflux or something..
And if it matters, I almost always drink vodka or mixes with vodka. I never touch beer - hate the taste tbh, and i've only occasionally had rum, gin, or tequila, but that doesn't give me stomach problems as far as I can remember in particular.. Although I think the gin did once?
+rep for any useful answers :)

I may be going completely down the wrong track here but it could be the Vodka, like you said you mainly only drink Vodka or mixes of it. I would suggest a little test when you next go out, don't drink Vodka if you want to drink alcohol try something else then see how you feel the next day if your fine theres your answer.
If you drink when you go out with people (I hope you don't drink alone as thats just sad) does anyone that your out with smoke any drugs as I know that my friend who went out with a group of people they were all drinking and smoking weed, she didn't have any but was ill the next day.
Or it could be that your not eating enough, and consuming too much liquid. If your going to drink get a full meal into you before you do go drinking.

when you start drinking do you allways eat before because this may be the problem that you havnt got any food inside you and also this sounds like what you get when you are hungover you might not have a headache etc so may not feel you have a hangover but probably are but only have a few symptoms

Seriously, you probably have a weak liver - perhaps you shouldn't drink too often people have died from this (not trying to scare you or anything but its a serious warning).
Well just stop drinking for a while, see if the pain stops or seek medical advice from someone in health care.
Or stop drinking period, as Ethanol is a poison so It wouldn't be uncommon at all to see these side-effects. Also at your age drinking is dangerous as your liver might not be developed yet
It could be IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) my friend has IBS and always has a bad bum after a night out. Google IBS and have a look at symptoms and if your worried see your doctor. Its not serious, just needs to be managed :)
like someone said it could be the vodka so try having a night out drinking something else
Iv had stomache ulcars and im usuelly sick the morning after drinking now which sucks :(
Well if you haven't had anything to eat you're letting the alcohol straight into your system and it's upsetting you all you have to do to stop it is eat before you drink and you'll be find i can almost garente it :D
it's because you're a lightweight and don't drink enough when you go out

Cwmbran.. I never really thought about if it was the Vodka or not. I rarely drink anything other than it, and so I don't remember if anything else caused this discomfort, but it's not like I took special notice of it before (since I thought it was normal up until my friend told me it wasn't last week). As for the other drugs, occasionally people will be smoking weed at a party, but in general the people I drink with don't smoke weed or cigarettes or anything so I'm not usually exposed to it and I think I can rule that out as a reason for the pain.
Partie, I will definitely try to eat more. It's a good general rule of thumb, I just have a habit of forgetting to eat dinner in the anticipation of going out for the night/rush of getting dressed up and end up with an empty stomach by the time drinking starts. -.- But yeah, is a stomachache part of a hangover? I mean.. I rarely get hungover (I can only remember 2 instances I'm sure I was hungover from, and both times I think I was still slightly drunk when I woke up) and I never had a headache from drinking or any of the other usual symptoms.. And the friends that I've talked to told me they don't get stomaches when they're hungover?
Soy, thanks for the warning :) It really is a bad habit and even though I try to do it relatively sparingly I should drink less, and that technically would solve my pain problem, lol!
Bef.. I've never heard of IBS before. From what I gathered on google though, I do have really similar symptoms, but that IBS happens for a lot of foods? Unless I have a mild case and its only alcohol specific, since I rarely get stomach aches other than cramps..
Kent - is that really true? It is true that I'm a lightweight since I weigh 105 at 5"5 and dont drink often so I dont have much of a tolerance, but I didn't think that affected it.. Besides, even the night when I drank a ton I still felt bad the next day. Worse probably, since then I was hungover too haha!
Leah and Stefy.. I never considered an intolerance. But I suppose that would make sense (and maybe it's only to vodka??). It would be kind of unfortunate if it turned out I couldn't drink at all, haha, but I suppose better in the long run!
So yeah.. Thank you guys for the input, it gave me a lot of food for thought. Definitely useful considering I can't exactly see a doctor about an issue with alcohol since I'm not 21 yet haha.
it's possible cause alcohol ***** your senses and judgement, which like being spun around makes you feel pretty ill. So when you go out and drink the spirits you might not know your tolerence not drinking much and all making you feel sick when you've sobered up..?

probs your livre n such likes cant really handle it that much and give you that as a result? Go talk to a doctor or health advisor bout it. people react differently to alcohol.
my sister gets all red n blotchy when she drinks alcohol. same with one of my cousins

I know it impairs you, but I definitely know my limits and how much it takes to get me drunk as opposed to tipsy as opposed to the one time i had way too much gin and blacked out. But the stomachache doesn't happen right when I sober up, it usually happens 12-24 hours later...

True.. I can't talk to a doctor about it yet though, since I'm still not 21 which is the legal age for drinking in the US :(

They won't arrest you for pains you get when you drink, they'd examine you or whatever, doctors keep everything as confidential as possible, excepts health records that need to be stored for doctors around the world / country.
In my town, we have a clinic called "one stop shop", I'm under the legal age to have sex, but if you get a thing called a C-Card you can redeem there and get free condoms, you can also tell them about confidential life happenings and they try to help you out etc..
Age Limits
Not everyone can drink beer legally in the UK - there's a minimum age limit as to when you can start buying alcohol. But this limit isn't clear cut.
* If you're in a restaurant you can have a glass with a meal at the age of 14.
* At 16 you can drink shandy1 in pubs.
* At 18 you can start buying alcohol legally in pubs.
Infact, I have been caught by the police with my friends at least twice, they drove past on their police bike the first time and turned around to come back to us and told us to go to a safe place where we can't be taken advantage of by perverts. The second time we we're told to keep the noise down and to not drink in public, all they did was seize our vodka.

Wow! The age limit is so much lower in the UK.. I'm so jealous! We can only drink at 21 or older here, and they always check for ID. Only really really sketch places will occasionally serve you without checking for ID, but theres not many places like that, and the only places I personally have managed to get alcohol though clearly being underage (X's on my hands haha) was at a few sketchy clubs in DC. And the police are much stricter here. The only places they are somewhat lax are on university campuses, where most university's have a "3 strike rule" where you can get caught up to 3 times after which you get kicked out of school. But in areas other than at universities, I've never heard of a cop letting go of anyone caught drinking. High schools are really really strict with drinking - anyone caught gets suspended or expelled, and it really impacts you for college admissions. And yeah, I've known several friends back in high school who had the cops called on parties, and they were caught and punished for it. Although I suppose they didn't really get that strict of a penalty I don't think.. Driving under the influence is an ABSOLUTE no no here though. Getting caught with a BAC of ANYTHING over a 0 when you're 21 or under means you're auto given a DUI. But yeah.. I might try going to a doctor.. Theres no specific clinics I can go to like that one you said about condoms (we have clinics like that around here for sex issues that are confidential) but there's nothing for alcohol. Thankfully I'm over 18 so I could at least go to the doctor confidentially without them telling my parents, but idk.. I dont want to have to pay for the appointment or anything -.- But thanks for the suggestion! +rep
And Y! .. How bad is your IBS? Like, does it affect you much with any other foods?? Or just with vodka?

Definitely see a doctor, they'll probably take blood tests to check your liver, kidneys, etc but worth finding out and ruling out what it could be!
Check your family history before you go to the docs too as they might ask.
Good luck sorting it :)

Goto a Doctor then, seeing as you are over the age to keep information confidential between You and the Doctor, well that's my advice.

My friend said to me, "You know your an alcoholic when you're afraid to fart", she had the same problem.
Perhaps your stomach scarred to too much consumption, try laying off the alcohol for a while, swap it for caffeine drinks?

eat some bread before drinking, always works
I have the same problem with Cider Cyndia.. Normally only when I drink a lot of it though. Certain people can be effected more than others I suppose. I never have that kind of problem with Vodka though...
I think it's nothing to worry about just try to avoid it when you can :P

Hi, I am no expert but I may have some suggestions. I would also like to ask if you saw a doctor (http://www.steadyhealth.com/stomach_ache_after_drinking_alcohol_t70182.html#) about this matter. Could it be that you have some problems with liver (http://www.steadyhealth.com/encyclopedia/Liver) functioning?
The only reasonable answer I can think of, as an non-expert, is that those gastric (http://www.steadyhealth.com/encyclopedia/Gastric) juices (acids) that are being produced more than usual when alcohol is introduced into the system may irritate stomach lining and cause your pain. I also know that there’s an increase in pancreatic and intestinal secretions and they too could be a reason for your pain (http://www.steadyhealth.com/stomach_ache_after_drinking_alcohol_t70182.html#)
Or you could have problems or be intolerant on some alcohol ingredients.
I am not sure that there would be any cure for this if you suffer of certain ingredients’ intolerance except for avoiding alcohol.

yeh I have an intollerance to cheese and I didn't realise it until after a few months so I was still eating it and id get really bad stomach aches and sometimes would pass out from the pain and stuff. It went away if I lay on the floor for about half an hour, it was really strange.
Tequila does this to me, try a different drink, sucks i cant have tequila sunrise. If i do happen to drink it (in cocktails without noticing) and get the bad stomach, i usually just have a few glasses of water, after about 10 mins it seems ok.
hope i helped.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I was talking with my dad, and I randomly found out he has IBS with most spicy foods (I've known forever that he wasn't able to eat spicy things, but I'd always assumed it was because he couldn't handle the taste lol. Now i feel bad for teasing him so much about it!). If its genetic, then maybe I have it? Whatever it is, I've been avoiding vodka for the last few weeks and its working :) Gin is my new thing!
