As you may or may not already know, two anime films have been pre-nominated for possible Oscar nominations in the Best Animated Feature category at this years Academy Awards.

Those two films are Sword of the Stranger and The Sky Crawlers.

We're all pretty much familiar with Sword of the Stranger, but The Sky Crawlers is Mamoru Oshii's (Director, Ghost in the Shell) first anime film in four years, and looks to be an amazing one.

These two films will be competing with 12 others for a possible Oscar nomination. Only three films can be nominated. The other films they're up against are...

Bolt
Delgo
Dragon Hunters
Fly Me to the Moon
Igor
Kung Fu Panda
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
$9.99
The Tale of Despereaux
Waltz With Bashir
WALL-E
Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!

In my opinion WALL-E will definitely get in, and Waltz With Bashir and Kung-Fu Panda have a change judging by their IMDB ratings. Pretty much everything else doesn't stand a chance. I think WALL-E will most probably win the Oscar as well, but I was reading how exactly the Oscar nominations are chosen a while back and although I can't remember what I read anymore, I do remember I came to the conclusion that Sword of the Stranger and The Sky Crawlers also have a good chance of getting nominated.

So I'm creating this thread just to inform you all of this important information! The only anime film to have ever won an Oscar is Spirited Away, and I doubt anything but WALL-E would win, but if either Sword of the Stranger and/or The Sky Crawlers can atleast get nominated, that would set another landmark in anime history.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on the 22nd of January, 12 days from now, which is a thursday. They will be announced in America at 5:30AM PT / 8:30AM ET, which is 1:30PM GMT. I think the Oscars.org website will have a live stream of the announcement, but unfortunately it's at a time where everyone is busy in the UK. I'll post the nominations in this thread on the 22nd if someone hasn't done already.

The Winners are going to be announced on Sunday the 22nd of February, exactly a month after the nominations are chosen.

Until then, please use this thread to discuss whatever you want to keep it popular. :D Do you think these two anime films have any chance of getting nominated? Do you actually want them to win? Have you even seen these films!?

Sword of the Stranger is seriously one of the best films I have ever seen, I really hope it at least gets nominated.

It's crap though, because the animation on WALL-E and KungFuPanda is impossibly good. Still, good that they got nominated.

Pre-nominated*

Although it is the 'Best Animated Feature' category, that still includes everything else in the film as well as the animation. Voice acting, presentation, directing, cast, characters, backgrounds, everything. Animation is what allows the films to be entered into the category, it's not what they're based on for winning. So you don't have to worry about WALL-E or Kung-Fu Panda winning just because of the quality of their animation. That would obviously be unfair on the other nominees because other companies don't have as much money as say Disney or Pixar. Each film gets voted upon fairly.

Besides, have you seen the animation in either Sword of the Stranger or The Sky Crawlers? Godly, I tell ya! Godly! Sword of the Stranger is beyond amazing in every aspect, and The Sky Crawlers blends CG animation with traditional Japanese style which creates something beautiful and stunning.

The girl who leapt through time is far better than any of them.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a fantastic film, but you might want to actually watch Sword of the Stranger and The Sky Crawlers before you say things like that, Nail. Besides, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time came out in 2006, it doesn't qualify to be in this year's Academy Awards.

You mean it would be better if the public could vote? That would be absurd. If that was the case Pixar films would win every year by a gigantic margin and nothing else would stand a chance. I believe a huge team of movie experts each make the decision on what film(s) they like best and what they want nominated. That way each film has a fair chance.

The Sky Crawlers...
DIDN'T GET NOMINATED

Sword of the Stranger...
DIDN'T GET NOMINATED

Oh well, Sword of the Stranger got nominated and won in my world! Turns out that they didn't seem to have much of a chance really. I guess that's down to their extremely limited releases and the fact that no one really knows about them. Hopefully some amazing anime gets nominated next year!

The final nominations are...

WALL-E
Kung-Fu Panda
Bolt

How the hell Bolt got nominated instead of Waltz With Bashir I'll never know.

Well I'll be damned. The Sky Crawlers and Sword of the Stranger didn't even make it past the nominations - but La Maison en Petits Cubes, another nominated anime, but in the 'Best Short Film (Animation)' category actually won the Oscar! Kato Kunio, the creator of the anime short, also gave the best speech ever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hODxuEKHWc). :D

I was actually keeled over the whole time he was giving that speech with laughter, at least he saw the funny side too though at the end. :P
