Press the "Insert" or "Ins" button on your keyboard. This means it overwrites when its on.

Hello, IT, have you tried turning it off and on again?

Dunno where the Insert button is but I know entirely what you're on about and it's VERY annoying. It's not your keyboard, I think it's the software.

It's above the Delete key on most keyboard and left to the right.

Ins on most software is overwrite.

So when you press it and move back to a previous bit and type then it'll remove the next letter and replace with one you're typing.
