Hiya guys... I've just bought a 500gig ext. hdd.
I'd like to try out this windows 7 thing...
but i'd like to run it the same time I run vista... so I can decide which i'd like to use.
how would I do it?
and are these copies of windows legal?
if yes... where can i get mine?
sorry for making this seperate thread... it's just, all the other threads are too technical for me >_>

First question
Once you've downloaded Windows 7 you would have to burn it to a DVD, and boot from the DVD or extract the iso and run the setup (check my thread called "Download + install windows 7" if you are unsure how to do that).
Then in the setup you would have to select "Custom (advanced)" from the 2nd setup screen then your external hard drive as the location you wanted to install it to.
Second question/Third question
Yeah, you can get a legal copy of Windows 7. Scroll down to the bottom of this page (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx) and select 32bit english (if you have less than 4gb ram) or 64bit english (if you have more than 4gb of ram). You need to use internet explorer to download it.
You should get given a product key once the download starts.
Sorry if this reply doesn't make sense, I have corsework to do so I rushed it :P

It might be a bit slow on an external drive. But you could dual-boot, or use a virtual machine.
Yes, they're legal! You can get a key and the download from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx
EDIT: I had a feeling Tom would do that. :P
if I was to dual-boot, how much disk space would it take???
and how would i select which OS I want to load??

It would take as much as the size of the partition you create. When you boot the computer, it'll ask you.

Windows 7 needs at least 20GB of space if you wan't to install a few programs on it.
If you are already using Vista or XP the setup will automatically create a boot menu for you.

Just pick x64. There's no reason to choose x86 over it.
