*Warning* A lot of filtered swearing may be found in this post
After getting another email saying I had downloaded too much in the past week and they are cutting my service for a week I gave them a phone.
Apparently I found out that they cut everybody who is in the top 5% of downloaders/uploaders in a small area. This is very stupid, what if people download a very small amount in one week and then someone gets their service cut for downloading a very small amount just because they were in the ******* "top 5%"
I also found out that Virgin Media do not do this with their cable customers and apparently their cable service is "a completely different company to their adsl service" What the ******* hell?
I know for sure that 5.6GB of bandwidth usage over the period of a week is certainly NOT an extreem amount, this is the second time it's happened and I am so pissed off with this ******* company i'm moving. Been with them for almost 8 years and this is how they treat their loyal long term customers.
I didn't even download the files at peak time, since when does everyone go online at 2 in the effing morning on a friday? Its not peak time.
**** you Virgin Media and your crappy service!
Nick.

They do do it with cable. It's STM. And it happens between 9-5 if youu go over the set allowance for your speed.

Virgin is great for me, we are getting the 10m service and we get at least 9meg at all times, least is usually 8meg, which is rare.

I'm kind of glad I'm not on any of those 'fair usage' policies, I get a set 60 GB per month, if I go over it I get shaped if I don't use it all too bad.

I'm not sure what Tiscali is, but I don't download that much anymore, but it used to be well bad for Tiscali users, back when we first joined we got capped to 4GB for going over ;/the 4GB then got us no where(kept going over) then we upgraded to 8MB "unlimited"
5.6GB in a week lol what are they on. And you'll be on a BT wholesale package which i know for a fact is contended at 50:1 so you should be able to download around 11GB per week without them able to say a thing.
You should phone and ask to talk to a manager. Then explain that what they're doing is offering you a 100:1 contended service which is not on.

:O What ISP do you use?
ul lol.. why not just move instead of complaning to us all first. It's not going to effect anyone if it was top the 5% in your area is it?

um its 5% in everyones area! but its 5% per area. Say you lived in a small village somewhere in say scotland. There might be about 100 people or so using VMs adsl service and they wouldn't even use that much bandwidth yet even if someone downloaded 1gb in a week they would get their service cut.

PING IS DEVASTATING.
I have 20 Meg broadband with virgin and am very happy with the services compared to other companys if you go over your bandwith they just lower the broaband speed for a maximum of 5 hours that only if you download like 5 GB within 3 hours of peak or something then you only have 2 hours anyway and your broadbnad speed is back to what it is. I think the trafficing is super most companys would cut your broadband completly and then make you pay the extra like 30p per meg you go over something silly like that?

Shouldn't make a difference unless you have a really piss poor router or are about 314159265 miles away from it.
When I used to stay with my grand parents, their limit on bandwidth was 8GB a month but normally I would use 40GB+. This was with BT and they simply charged you 59p extra per GB you used. I think that is the way everyone should do it, as 59p for a GB isn't bad but still would be nice if it was cheaper.

59p for a gigabyte is very bad.

So I'm using the Thompson SpeedTouch (BeBox) that Be supply you with and thats rubbish, cant get over 13meg with it when using wireless. However I plug in my Linksys router and I'm flying. So heres my BeBox speedtest via wireless.
[upto 24meg, I get 20 on other router]
