I wonder what happened..

Any idea of casualties and deaths?

just seen a picture with all the passengers standing on the wings. :O

All passengers are off the aircraft FAA says. Well done the pilots :)

Note: Seems to be a bird strike, pilot told them they were going to ditch. They did it very well, since the area is built up so the river was the best bet to be honest.

for some strange reason, i hate flying over water on planes. much prefer going over land.

how does a plane half-sink? is it because the cabin is full of air?

Yeah, I think that's probably why.
I want to know, what happened to their inflatable rafts? Don't appear to be there.

I did see someone have their life jacket on...

A bird disabled two engines apparently. Its floating on the water as it had air in. It would slowly sink like how the car has. If its a deep river then it will all go under. The water must be freezing :/.

Been watching Sky News since 9:15pm.
Everyone coming ashore with their life jackets still on.

They say the river is only 3-4ft deep at that point, so the plane will probably be stood up.

Sailed down that river when we went there a few years ago.. pretty neat to see it again.

Very nice work by the pilot there, glad everything is OK. :)

Yeah, New York is freezing at this time of year. It seems the boats and emergency services were pretty quick. Pilots seem to do a good job on a water ditch, as it could of been worse if it damaged the main body of the plane and say snapped in two or something.

Jesus, well done to the Pilots!

I bet thats going to be chalanging getting it out.

Becuase with it being America, as soon as someone says a plane has crashed a huge speculation will emerge and people will start thinking 9/11. You know what people are like for speculating.

I think hats off to the pilots for such a great landing.

Takes some skill to keep the aircraft in one piece like that, and to maintain all life.

I think these 3 Cabin Crew will be getting a pay rise..

DarrenToogood

In my opinion, I think they should be awarded for their services. The have maintained life of 130+ people, and prevented what could have been a serious clean-up operation.

I think a trip to the White House is needed for them.

Many people at first will think its a terrorist attack, especially after 9/11. It hit them hard :'(. Thank god it isn't related and the engines were having trouble. The security level is very high at the moment as well due to Obama taking over in the next few days.

kk.
15-01-2009, 10:18 PM
lol, thats the guy, US airways :P my bad

Yeh but its quite clearly an accident. Even with the speculation, it wasnt anything about terrorists, all about a bird (geese) lol

I know what your saying, but if you just heard on radio, tv or anything. "PLANE CRASH" most people will think its terrorist related. So they have to "confirm" it was an accident.

Very lucky, the odds are that if you land a plane in the water the fuselage breaks and well yeah :'(

Good landing I guess

It can't be that shallow considering the size of the rescue boats, they'd need quite a lot more water.

Most passengers managed to step straight onto a wing or boat, accorded to Mayer Bloomberg, press converance says very few got wet at all - apparently the pilot had time to walk the wreckage twice to check everyone was off.

The pilots are hero's Them and the FA should be awarded for making sure everyone got off the plane alive, also a big thanks to the ferries in the River for reaching the aircraft in good time!

This has got to be one of the greatest endings of a news story for a long time. My mum woke me up last night to see it on the news. Congrats to the pilot for the amazing landing.

Also that picture looks like their posing for a postcard.

Intresting read on a feature that the Airbus has;

The Airbus Ditching Button

http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/assets_c/2009/01/A320-ditching-thumb-560x402.jpg

When pressed, it commands the aircraft operating system to close the outflow valve, emergency ram air inlet, avionics inlet, extract valve and flow control valve. In addition, it will immediately shutdown the cabin fans. The button itself has a guard over it to prevent accidental activation. The system is available on all A320 family, A340/A330 and A380 aircraft.

According to the A320 quick reference guide, the ditching procedure calls for Flaps 3 and a minimum approach speed of 150 kts. The system should be activated at 2000 feet AGL and Airbus recommends 11 degrees of pitch at the time of touchdown.

The ultimate purpose of the system is to seal the aircraft to prevent water from undermining the buoyancy of the aircraft to keep it afloat in the event that the airframe remains intact after impacting the water. Federal Aviation Regulation Part 25, Section 801 describes the safety requirements in the event of a ditching:

Yet it is unlikely that most landings in water end up like this one and usually end up with the plane split in half or in peices?

It is rare, because if the wing touches the water thing, it can snap the plane into pieces. (Watched it on Air Crash Investigation). So really, they are lucky to be alive.

Oh, thats scary. I blame obama.

It's no one fault, it had a multiple engine failure due to bird strike, that has nothing to do with Obama <_<.

You think I believed him?. Anyway, its been confirmed that for the flight crew didn't have time to use the Airbus "ditching" system/feature/function, whatever you want to call it.

He has been named a Hero, been invited to fly on the Air Force 1, was invited to Obamas inauguration, given keys to his town and more.

Good on him.
