View Full Version : Waking Up in the morning?

Anyone got real good tips? I always sleep through my alarm and it is really annoying as I hardly EVER have breakfast and I end up asking my friends at school for food, I don't want to look like a scavenger. My friend told me some thing about tapping your neck to wake up a specific time but I don't know if it works? I want to wake up at 6 and I sleep at 10.

Dip your head in a sink full of water as soon as you wake up. That gets you ready for the day. Works for me. :P
As to waking up, I have trouble towards the end of the week, subscribed to thread in hope of some tips. :P

I was thinking of leaving a bowl of water near my bed so as soon as I wake I dip my head in the water.

Well I'm sure that would be a good enough shock to the body..
Another tip my parents do (when we need to get up for flights, etc) put the alarm clock at the other end of the bedroom so you need to get up to turn it off. :)
There's also some good clocks where you need to do a jigsaw puzzle to turn it off.. hehe.

I would wake up and stay there and sleep or I would sleep through it.
Get a louder alarm
put it next to ur bed/under ur pillow
put it on other side of bed.
drink lots of water before u go bed, so you gotta get up to pee.
get a family member to wake you up
thats just off the top of my head

I sometimes go back to sleep was like 2 hours late for work once. My dad gets me up on college days, ask a parent to?

Great Advice! but if you drink a lot wouldn't you pee the bed? Mum wakes me up on 7. She doesn't want to wake me up early.

try and get in a routine of sleeping and getting up.
set more than one alarm.

set 2 alarms on your phone or set 2 different ones. I always set my phone alarm for half an hour before i want to wake up and either drift back to sleep or just lay there with my eyes open, then have one that wakes you up at the time you want to get up, should help you. works for me usually.

I have an alarm on my phone that keeps repeating till I snooze it.

I put my ipod alarm on full blast, then set my phone alarm 5 minutes after it.
If I turn my alarm on snooze I would never be able to get up, so you have to be scrict with yourself.
You should go to bed earlier so you don't need as much sleep and feel easier to get up.
Maybe a louder alarm, if its on a phone sometimes I set it for 5:35am then for 5:45am 5:47am 5:49 so it constantly goes off whilst your a little aware. Have a shower when you wake up.

If I need to be up early then I just go to bed earlier then when I wake up early but still refreshed. Only works if you normally go quite late though.

I usually set my alarm aswell as the alarm on my phone so they go off at the exact same time. except i hide my phone at night so i have to run round in the morning looking for it so i can turn it off. lmao
sad, but it works.
Yes, if you were 5 years old..
Not necessarily. Although I have never wet the bed, there are people with weaker bladders who have that problem throughout their lives.
Waking up is the hard part, but if you set your alarm loud enough there is no reason why you shouldn't. Getting up is about self discipline, push yourself to get out of bed and you will do it. It's all in the head. I managed lights out at 11 and waking up at 5 in the morning every day, and that whole day (bar an hour and a half for scoff and *** breaks) would be spent doing something, be it ironing, cleaning, pt, lessons etc etc. If I can do it, anyone can - so just get up drag yourself to the shower and go.

I achieve 6:05am WOOO
Tips
- Have two alarms
- Have the energy to get out of bed
- Whisper to yourself for 20 seconds it is now x:xx and I want to wake up x:xx
- (This not my tip but I did try it dunno if it worked) Ok, it might sound stupid but when you are lying in bed sit up and make a fist and tap the back of your neck however many times corisponding to the time you want to get up at for example:
6 taps = 6 o'clock
7 taps = 7 o'clock
8 taps = 8 o'clock
9 taps = 9 o'clock
10 taps = 10 o'clock
Can someone try this above one and I want to see if it works.

I would do what I do, its always worked for me :P
If you can change the tone and volume on your alarm, change them because the main problem is that since we hear the same tone over and over again each time we wake up, it becomes routine and we learn to ignore it. Getting a different alarm might help as well, or you could even use both :P, put it/them on the other side of your room so you HAVE to get up to turn it/them off, this will make you more likely to wake up since your on your feet and not in your bed where you can just drift off again. If you do this long enough, you will get a pretty static routine.

I must be some crazy guy with alarms that keep ringing until they are turned off. How can you sleep through an alarm which doesn't turn off by itself? Invest in one of those, and make sure it is the other side of the room! :)

I have an alarm that wakes me up, then I have a shelf that is pretty low so everytime I turn it off I have to reach to the shelf, and I usually bang my head on it which wakes me up.

Sarcastix gave the best response in my opinion.
I would run into the problem of oversleeping my alarms every 3 months or so last year because I would end up getting used to the sound and would just automatically reach over and turn off my alarm while I was still half asleep and then I'd oversleep. The best way to fix this is the change your alarm tone like he said. This is easy especially since you mentioned you use your phone I think? Or else if you use one of those conventional clock alarms, go out and buy one or two more so that you can switch them around every few months when you start sleeping through them. This helps loads for waking you up.
As for forcing yourself out of bed, the best way in my opinion is, like sarcastix and a few others said, to put your alarms across the room from you, or in some other place that would require you to physically get out of bed to go turn it off. This way you can't reach over and just flip it off and then end up staying in bed and falling back asleep because its so warm.
Other than that, if you keep waking yourself up at a set time, usually your body will start getting used to that and it'll start waking up on its own at that time. I'd also suggest sleeping earlier if you're tired, or I'd strongly suggest naps during the day (my personal favorite!) which also will help in the long run since then you won't be so tired when you wake up in the mornings. :)

you do it.
I think the alarm at the other end of the room is a good idea :)

Guys relax, the simple thing to do is get a loud alarm clock and put it somewhere unreachable like on top of a shelf of some sort, therefore you have to make some kind of effort to turn it off and once your kind of doing that, you wont go back to bed unless your really lazy or extrmely tired. :)
I was thinking of leaving a bowl of water near my bed so as soon as I wake I dip my head in the water.
What gives me motivation to get up is the fact that it's quarter to eight and I have to be ready and out of the door for 5 past, so I need to get out nowwwww or i'm gonna miss school and annoy my mum :P

I'm a freak of nature..
If I decide I want to be up at a certain time, I will wake up 5 minutes before that certain time.
Doesn't work ALL the time so i set an alarm sometimes too, but usually when I set up an alarm I wake up 5 minutes before the alarm, an alarm never wakes me up, i'm always awake before it goes off.
Getting out of bed is another thing completely...

Lol as my mum tells me ' Go to bed earlier ' LOL
I do get woken up by my dad first, but then go back to sleep, then my mum wakes me up like 10 minutes later, and I go back to sleep, then I get up lol :D
Also going to bed early for me just makes me tired again lol.

Get a big clock so then you can realise how ****** you are. But umm, I just press snooze with a soft alarm tone and usually just sit up in my bed for a like half an hour. Then I just have a shower, that wakes me up.

Yea, I have a HUGE problem getting up in the moring. One of my family members will usually send my dog in to wake me up. The dog comes in, wakes me up, then goes to sleep at the end of my bed.
It's weird, the night before I'll think "Oh gosh I need to be up at 6" and I'll just wake up at 6.. So I don't have this problem :)
I'd suggest having your parents wake you up or set up multiple alarm clocks.

If you've been making yourself wake up early around 530 or so over and over, your body is probably used to getting up early now, so if you're still sleeping through your alarm your body is just waking itself up around that time with some fluctuations. It happens to me.. I usually get up at around 7am and so on weekends when I dont set my alarm i wake up anyway between 655am and 715am.. or sometimes when I sleep through my alarm I'll usually wake up without fail at a random time before 730 or so.

Thank you.. But I wasn't making myself waking up around 5:30am recently.
my sister wakes me up the silly **** with the sound of her hairdryer
Set an alarm for (e.g) 8:50am then another one for 9.00am and finally another for 9:05am. Might help :P

Multiple alarms really is the best solution :) By the way, does taking baths at night actually work? Every time I shower before sleeping, especially if I go to sleep with my hair still damp I without fail oversleep.
