I did, but she still did. Luckily he had no problem with it and actually apologised as I admitted I was going to ask her prior to him asking her.

To be fair, and honest, it comes down to what means the most to you - a girl you fancy, or your best mate who (presumably) you've known and trusted for years.

Put yourself in his shoes - would he take your girlfriend? If he did, would you still be his mate? Probably not. I hate to sound the pessimist, but there are certain unwritten rules that you just can't break without sacrificing friendships.

Still, if she's, like, incredibly good looking, then it could be worth it :P

Being honest is the best. And if they broke up, you could always ask your mate what he would think if you decided to ask her out because if he knows you like her and were going to ask her out before he did then he might not mind it. Just don't get with her without asking your mate beforehand because relationships come and go but friends are forever!
