iPod touch won't charge.

When I turn my iPod Touch on it says there is 10% battery remaining or something and I normally charge it at this point by connecting it to the computer so I can sync it as well. But when I connected it this morning it didn't do anything, so I opened iTunes and still nothing. I've tried different usb ports but I've also tried the one I always use with my bluetooth and that worked so I don't think it could be the computer even though it's starting to die.

I searched it on google and got the apple site, it told me to read the guide on it but I lost it, it told me to turn my ipod on/off but the battery is dead now so it doesn't always turn on, I've restarted my computer as well and nothing is working and since the sound on my computer isn't working my iPod is the only way to listen to music and now that isn't even working.

Any ideas? I'll rep or whatever.

I thought that but most of the computers have iTunes which means it'll sync and I'll lose my songs and since it clearly isn't working on this computer I won't have them to listen to. I've also tried using a charger connected to the mains or whatever, and that didn't work either. All it seems to do when I connect the wire to the iPod and the computer is turn my iPod on. Which doesn't really help me because then it'll just turn off and won't turn on as there is no battery.

It worked fine last time I did it which was on Saturday because I added some songs.

This is where my apple certification comes in handy despite a little outdated.

Charging issues can be a number of things,



Faulty cable (Try another cable)
USB connected to USB hub (connect directly to PC)
Lower powered USB port (try a different USB port or computer)
Windows 2000 installed on machine (i doubt you have 2000)
iPod is "locked up" (Reset the ipod)

Also check the connection on the iPod itself, I have had iPods given to me for repairs because the owner has managed to get some pocket lint stuck in the port.

If your iPod has been dead for a few days it often acts weird when you start charging again causing it to cycle through boot up (keeps trying to boot then dying, boot then dying etc) this is because iPods take all power from the battery never from the mains itself so when it tries to boot it runs out of juice. When you plug it in on boot, attempt a restart and it should give you the monochrome battery charging symbol.

I am unsure how to restart a touch as my certification only takes me to iPod videos, however try this, hold down the sleep / wake button at the same time as the home button after about 10 seconds the apple logo should appear which tells you it is rebooting.

Also in terms of connecting to another pc,

iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Devices > "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods"

Will stop someone elses music from overwriting yours.

I tried another computer and it charged it and mine still refuses to even notice my iPod is connected. I've tried different cables, and different ports, there is a reset option on the iPod itself which I've tried and it reset but didn't do anything at all and I'm worried if I reset it and it removes the songs I won't be able to put them back on because it won't sync which means my iPod is basically useless. Someone on another forum suggested leaving it connected for a few hours, I tried this and it didn't do anything. When I connect it, it turns on my iPod and then that's it really and when I turn it off nothing happens. But the fact that it worked with the other computer I tried it on which is about a month old just leads me to believe its my computer which is years old now.

Does your PC recognise that you have plugged the device in? Usually with some sort of audio notification or several hundred popups about what you want to do with the device.

Yeah, it makes the noise that it makes when I connect something. I think if I remember correctly when I connected it it made the noise a few times even though the I didn't disconnect it.

Also should have mentioned it before, if your iPod shows a monochrome battery charging symbol (instead of colour one) or "charging, please wait..." message when you connect it. This means there is insufficient battery for it to be shown on your computer or iTunes, you will need to leave it plugged in to charge it until it does display again.

Sounds like its basically broken, try calling up Apple or take it into the shop you purchased it. I have an iPhone, they are similar obviously :)

How can it be broken when it works on another machine?

I reinstalled iTunes and it worked although it thinks it's a camera for some reason, it'll charge and sync so I don't mind that.

There are two key drivers for iPods one is the Apple Mobile Device service and the iPod driver, by reinstalling itunes you also reinstall these drivers.

As for the camera in notification displaying when you connect your iPod touch, you can either just put up with it, or you can disable windows trying to suggest things for your iPod when you connect it.

Connect your iPod,

Start -> Control Panel -> Printers and Sound -> Scanners and Camera -> Right click on iPod touch and go to properties

There should be an option to "take no action" under something to do with the pop-ups. Select that and "okay" your way out.

That will stop your pc from thinking its a camera.
