Yeh well about a year ago i got a 4gb usb stick and after a few months it stopped working, so at the time i just threw it in the drawer and got a new one but may aswell get it working again if i can

god knows the brand (doesnt say anywhere on it and i can't remember)

when i plug it in it comes up "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and winodws does not recognize it"

It shows up in Device manager in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section as "Unknown Device" and in the status box it says no drivers (it's never had disk or anything should install itself) its not in the disk management so i can't reformat it either.

That just means that it has shorted, has it been water damaged or maybe something bridging a connection somewhere, this happened when i was converting and xbox controller for pc use.
