Microsoft may be doing its best (http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/05/ballmer-to-businesses-deploy-winxp-now-and-face-concerns-from-e/) to move past Windows XP once and for all, but a Los Angeles woman is alleging that the company is all too happy to bank some extra change on the OS in the meantime, and that it's essentially trying to have it both ways. As a result, she's now suing Microsoft over its XP "downgrade" fees, and requesting that the lawsuit be granted class-action certification so others can get a piece of the action. Apparently, Emma Alvarado bought a Lenovo PC last June and had to pay an additional $59.25 to downgrade to XP, which she claims is simply a case of Microsoft taking advantage of consumer demand for XP to pad its profits. The suit further alleges that the seemingly endless extensions (http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/08/windows-xp-downgrade-deadline-extended-to-july-31-2009/) of the XP deadline were "likely due to the tremendous profits that Microsoft has reaped from its 'downgrade' option." For Microsoft's part, it insists that the company itself "does not have a downgrade program," and that it doesn't get any of the money from the Vista-to-XP downgrade options.

I think I am always going to stay with XP, or at least until there are skin modification tools for Windows 7 / an official stable release of Windows 7.

Urm wth?

If i want to downgrade i simply stick in a XP disk? doesn't cost me?

I'm assuming its the Lenovo who's gaining from the charge? in which case surely that should be them being sued and not microsoft.

It's silly, Microsoft are cashing in on previous projects that they have 'abandoned'. If they've abandoned them, why are they charging people to get them? :S

uhm, because microsoft is a business they charge people to make profits; they own the product so they can still sell em? You think cause MS stopped developing Windows 2000 that they'll give em free to the shops/customers? no

dno if i get what you mean exactly if the above isnt what you mean then ignore it and post what you mean ;)

Yeah I know what you mean, but it's a bit cheeky of Microsoft to charge people EXTRA for an older version of their Operating system. :P

I don't like the look of 7, but the OS as a whole is far better than Vista. :P

Microsoft had a strict agreement with the Manufacturers that XP had to stop being sold with OEM PCs, but then Manufactureres found a way around it by selling an XP license AND a Vista license with the PC, so actually, the ones cashing in on it ARE people like Dell, HP, Lenovo, IBM etc etc

This is about downgrading Microsoft Windows XP.

Regardless of everything else this forum is intended for discussing Microsoft products. As XP is a product it is suitable to discuss it here. If I was buying a Mac I would post it in the Mac section even though I'm buying the Mac from BestBuy.

I think he was just making a point that Microsoft simply sell there product to suppliers who then sell it on to customers. Microsoft make no money from computer manufacturers offering to sell XP at extra cost. As previously said Microsoft tried to stop this from happening but companies found a way around it.

I dont stick up for MS very often but this time they havn't done anything wrong and I think its unfair for this person to try and sue them

I'm pretty sure it works like this:

You buy the computer with Vista Home Premium, but if you want to downgrade to XP. The only way the OEM can get a copy of Windows XP is with Windows Vista Ultimate which has a clause offering Windows XP if you don't like Vista Ultimate. So that extra charge to downgrade is actually upgrading you to Ultimate which then allows you to downgrade to XP.

As Microsoft have stated, they make no money out of this.

I know its about Microsoft Windows, but you think it has to do something about microsoft when microsoft has nothing to do with the downgrades.
See i can use bold text too.

You really need to learn to read posts, and reply with answers that make sence, and btw i never called you name? i just said how stupid you looked for thinking that you knew it all.

I never said this had something to do with Microsoft other than Microsoft being the creators of XP. It is irrelevant that Microsoft has nothing to do with downgrading.

It's a lovely feature :).

I think you need to read posts better. I'm finding you not making much sense. This is the Microsoft Windows section. This is news related to Microsoft Windows;).

My pc came with XP installed, not activated though, but to be fair it is a custom pc.
