View Full Version : New Server
Hey,
Got my refurbished server from ebay today (I know understand why it costs £20 to ship it :P). Few pictures:

Got VMWare ESX Server 3i installed on it with two VMs setup currently (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and Openfiler - a varient of CentOS designed for storage). Plan to install Smoothwall in another VM when I get a ethernet ADSL2+ modem/gateway.
If your intrested here are a few screenshots of setting up the VMs in ESX 3i:

Thanks,

Very nice. Are you using it for a homeserver?
Yep, decided to upgrade my current home server which is just a old PC to this one. Only problem is that it is rather loud :P

You... used... Windows 7... on... a... server...
Really, shouldn't you wait until 7 is stable?
I mean cause if 7 goes down your VM's will too.
Just seems like you have a bit of a deathwish to me, but if that's how you want to do it... D:

Why get such small parts/thin server if it's not going in a data-centre? :P
+1 on interest of specs and price.
Where did I say I was using Windows 7 on the server? VMWare ESX 3i (http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi/) ,which is a bare metal hypervisor, is the software running on it (Its not really a operating system as it just provides a layer between the VMs and the physical server which adds obvious performance advantages over running a Virtualisation program in a OS).
If you are judging by the screenshots then thats just the software you run on a client PC to manage the server.
Specs:
2x Intel Xeon 3Ghz Processors
2GB DDR2 RAM (Plan to upgrade - supports upto 12GB)
1x WD 500GB SATA Hard drive (Not included - this was mine)
Dell PERC SCSI/SATA RAID controller
2x Onboard Gigabit ethernet connections
Price: £175 ex. P&P

At least spell pretty correctly. You're not funny, leave now before you make an even bigger idiot of yourself.
Ill close this thread for the night since some people are obviously intent on turning this into a spamfest.
