Hai,

So my brother is going to uni and is going to sell his PSP, so I said I might buy it. Though I only want it if I can host my own website on it, though I know windows/Linux can be installed on it I don't know if it will be powerful enough/enough ram/CPU to run a webhost with HTML,CSS,Php & mySQL.
Would it be possible, because I know for a fact that a £60 second hand PSP running as a webhost is cheaper than a £4/mo webhost for 4 years.

Thanks :)

Could it even store files for all of the applications? And at the HTML,CSS,Php & mySQL bit you only install PHP mySQL and Apache/IIS or whatever your using :P

for $60 you mind aswell buy a crap pc to run the server on.. From the articles I've read i don't think windows or linux on psp could hold a website, even a very unpopular one.

A computer for a mere £35? I doubt it.

You can install Windows on it but it's extremely slow. From what I remember it takes like 30 minutes to boot Windows 98.

Nick, the ones you posted aren't running the actual operating system. Just a web interface that looks like it.

Windows on the PSP would run terrible. However if you really want to run a server off your PSP I'd checkout linux http://jacksonm80.googlepages.com/linuxonpsp.htm

I even see Ubuntu being put on some PSPs http://aruljohn.com/info/pspubuntu/

It's not going to be able to support it, especially with the amount of processing it takes, plus with an overloaded GUI on top of a gaming system (XP).

Plus it's going to be hosting it over WiFi (since it doesn't have an ethernet connection), so you take that speed down to about dial-up speed for the end user.

Plus you'll have to have it plugged up all the time, then you have storage space to worry about (not sure how big the Sony cards go up to now days).

Its a webpage, nothing like the real XP. Compare the minimum specs of XP to the specs of the psp. The only thing it has is the CPU.

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

CD-ROM or DVD drive

Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

It doesn't run the proper XP/Vista. It's just a flash file made to look like the windows OS.

So NO, you cannot run XP/Vista on a psp and use it as a webhost.

The PSP has a MIPs processor, the only Windows it's going to run without emulation is Windows CE.

If you'd care to read the links you provided, you probably wouldn't have posted them.

Your idea of using a PSP to host a website is very stupid. Firstly, PSP's aren't very powerful. Secondly, leaving it on 24/7 wouldn't do it any good. Thirdly, I imagine your web connection's upload speed isn't something like 100MBPS. You'd need a very fast connection. Plus, as mentioned, it'll be on wifi, making it slower. Also, most ISP's don't allow you to host servers on their connections.

No. Practically none do. It's in the ToS.

Any I have looked at don't say anything about servers

Hmm, i'm also struggling to find it, but i know for definate i've read in the past in pretty much any ISP's fair usage policy. They must have changed it.

They used to say that they didn't allow you to host websites from your home connection, maybe that has changed... I'll try finding it in ToS's.

Tiscali say this:

6.2 The Services are only to be used by you for private use for residential purposes. You must not use them for business or commercial purposes, or resell or supply the Services to anyone else.

Virgin Media:

Residential Use: The Service is provided exclusively for use by residential customers and may not be used for business use.

Business use would be a webhost. They don't word it as "You can't run a webhost" but they say that in other words.

Not always, not if it was for personal use like accessing files from school or something.

But there is still nothing wrong with hosting a small apache server on port 80, just make sure your not selling on any services.

Yeah, but he wouldn't need a web connection if he only wanted to do that. Plus he said he wanted to create a webhost.
