It was thought up when the state of kansas decided to teach creationism alongside evolution but they didn't specify which god they had to teach about so some guy made it up to prove his point and it's sort of bloomed form there. I ordered the gospel of the fsm yesterday lol

Well, in Australia they have the equivalent of the census and in 2001 (I think. I don't know the exact year) there was a huge nationwide practical joke where many citizens put down "Pastafarian" as their religion - a religion in which worships the flying spaghetti monster.

That's about all I know. I remember it well.

That's not the point at all. It wasn't to show how "*+*_HiLaRiOuS*+&+" religion is, but rather to prove a point that we have to teach kids things that can be proved as opposed to just believed. The main issue supposely was that the theory of intelligent design used ambiguous references to an unspecified "Intelligent Designer" to avoid court rulings against using creationism as a science, but in doing so, that left the role of "Intelligent Designer" open to anything, and thats where the joke comes from. It even has supporting evidence which makes sense, but is completely ridiculous.
