I've always wondered how it should be pronounced - I pronounce it 'Aich' a lot of my friends say 'Haich' so what is the correct way to pronounce it I've been criticised for pronouncing it "wrong" but I think I pronounce it right - so what IS the correct way??

The 'correct/proper' way of pronouncing H is 'Aitch' but I say 'Haitch'

its hard to explain what im trying to say. I know the proper way is aitch and it varies between different regions. Its how youre brought up really.

but what im trying to say is to say haitch, it makes a different noise to aitch. and when you use h at the beginning of a word you pronounce it more similar to haitch than aitch. as in:

ha-lo not ay-lo, hell-oh not ell-oh, happ-e not app-e

scotland has no say in this argument, sorry

probably because haitch has a H at the beginning that's why you think it's right, and i do know what you're trying to say.
& thanks, i never get a say in anything cause i'm right?:S

i tend to drop the H from all words starting with that letter. like i say (h) ello, (h) appening, (h) appy etc. etc.

the only time i'd actually like not drop the H is when i like try, and not speak naturally or whatever :S

i went into nerd google mode and found a website about the letter 'h' LOL.

and this, which is soo true, i remember if you prononced it wrong in english by accident everyone in the class would be like OMG YOUR A CATHOLIC :@

If the dropping of aitch is a social marker, the pronunciation of the letter h can also be a social, political, and sectarian marker. In the Irish Republic, the haitch pronunciation is common, but the situation is more complex in Northern Ireland where, it is claimed, Catholics say haitch, whereas the royalist Protestants follow the poms and say aitch. We are told in a Northern Irish newspaper that ‘H is the most dangerous letter in the Northern Ireland alphabet. Catholics supposedly say haitch, when Protestants say aitch. There may not be any scientific evidence for this trait but bigots can’t even spell scientific—so, depending on how you say it, H can get you a right kicking’.This is tongue-in-cheek, of course, but a quick surf through the Internet provided ample evidence for this aitch/haitch divide in Northern Ireland—say haitch in a proddy area or aitch in a mick area and you could very well be in for ‘a right kicking’.

I've always pronounced it as 'Haitch', my english teacher used to say that English people pronounce it as 'Haitch' and American people pronounce it as 'Aitch', although I'm not really sure if its true of if she was making it up.
