View Full Version : Windows Live Messenger 2009 made me puke.

Sitting at work, crying as I have lost my phone when I get prompted to install a new version of WLM. I was hoping it was a bug fix as I have had a few bugs in 2008 such as the lag of switching to handwrite from text.

But after installing it, I realised that this was a new version entirely, this was the messenger 2009 version and when it started it made me actually throw up a little in my mouth (although that could be the result of the 6 scotch's last night when drowning my sorrows of losing my phone).

Here check it out for yourself,

I didn't stick around with it for long so I can tell you what the changes are exactly, I did notice it only has 4 types of statuses now.

Availible
Unavailible
Away
Appear offline

Or something like that,

I literally installed it, puked, ranted, uninstalled and installed 2008 again.

Yeah it is sick, my sister is stuck with it because I uninstalled her WLM 8.5. >: )

They've tried to integrate a Web 2.0 style into a program which really shouldn't... just no.

Be honest now, you wanted sympathy because of the whole scotch fiasco ;)

I've had 09 for ages. I quite like it :) The only thing I disagree on is the "Groups" bit, which cannot be removed, which sucks :/

The web 2.0 thing really was not needed for this client, and what was the need to switch the DP from the right to the left. Its sort of like when you switch from a windows to a mac and try to minimise or close the program down.

its nice once you get it to how you want it.
the status thing is stupid and the webcam settings have become limited.

That was an odd change indeed, why they decided to change the sides of the display pictures is unknown. The statuses is an ok update, no-one really used "Out to Lunch" and most people would of put "Away" anyway :P

Also whats the point changing the status icons, we have grown up know what the original status icons meant,

green dude - online
green dude with clock - away
green dude with no entry - busy
grey dude - offline

etc

It's great imo, and you can hide everything like whats new, favourites and groups.

The new ones aren't that hard to remember, it uses the typical Green to Red method:

Green - Online
Orange - Away
Red - Busy

Grey - Offline.

Easier to remember, there are less complications, because technically Away, Out to Lunch and the other silly one all meant the same thing anyway, that you've sodded off from the computer for more than 10 minutes :P

I got the 2008 one on my windows XP PC and on my laptop I got the new 2009. I personally think it looks alright but it is a bit confusing and takes some time getting used to.

tbh, it's like Vista to me

I couldn't imagine of going back to the old version, as i've just grown used to the features and style of the newer.

Also, if you look around, you'll see you can customize everything (almost) to the way you like xD.

It's the most ugly version of MSN I've ever seen. I use Adium and WLM 8.x

I love it, granted I've been using 8.1 for years because it has a theme that wasn't available for 8.5 but it just seems so much more modern and, as jin said, web 2.0. I love using the colours for statuses and simplifying it to get rid of the redundant ones. The change of DP position takes some getting used to but it seems fine when you get used to it. The whole thing just looks more up to date and sexy.

I can't stand msn in any way shape or form anyway. So I don't like this one either.
