Urasawa should be number two to be honest. Everyone calls him the new God of Manga now that Tezuka isn't around. 20th Century Boys, Monster and Pluto have all been hailed as masterpieces. Takehiko Inoue should be higher as well. Much like Urasawa, he has three hugely acclaimed series (Slam Dunk, Vagabond and Real). I don't agree with a lot of people on that list.
Southe,

well Astro boy was one of the 1st manga's wasn't it? Dragonball is a classic reason why SJ is so popular now. OP is the best selling ever and is awesome.
Doraemon and Sazae-san are always in the ratings fight with the OP thats for anime tho but would assume the manga is popular aswell in that case. Slam dunk was why Japan intrest in basketball to rise and Naoki Urasawa should be higher yes even tho ive only seen/reading Monster its good.
1. Toriyama
2. Oda
dno about the rest.

Yes and I agree that Tezuka should be number one, which is why I said Urasawa should be number two. Tezuka practically introduced manga to the mainstream and its often said that he is the origin of all manga, just like The Beatles are the origin of all rock music. I also agree with Toriyama, as his art style is very unique and he also has Dr. Slump under his belt. However, I know you'll hate me but I don't agree with Oda being so high. Just because he works hard and his manga sells a lot doesn't make him revolutionary. I don't believe he has really inspired any change in the manga industry nor has his manga introduced anything new. As for Doraemon and Sazae-san, they are two of the longest running manga series' ever and have inspired generations, so its understandable they would rank high.
1. Osamu Tezuka
2. Naoki Urasawa
3. Takehiko Inoue
4. Akira Toriyama
5. Fujiko F. Fujio
Make what you will of the rest.

just the fact his work is now the best selling series of all time. with every volume new records are broken, the fact that its what dragonball was in its prime. and the fact its stupidly popular in Japan. OP is advertising tons of stuff at the moment even a baseball team if i remember. Op took the crown away from DB. Because of that, thats why i think hes on the list despite not being as revolutionary as say Toriyama who inspired him. By the time OP finished im sure he'll be at the top of the list as the most successful
Southe,

also just found out OP breaks 1st printing record again for the 4th time in a row now.
Release Amount: 3,200,000 (another record release)

Thats being successful, not revolutionary, as I already said. I'm not going to get locked in another debate about Oda with you anyway. I just personally think its really unfair that he is on there, but the list seems more of a popularity contest anyway.

Hopefully Oda doesn't follow the same path as Kentarou Miura or Jyoji Morikawa. It would be nice for him to start another successful series when One Piece ends. I've heard that he already knows how to end the series, so hopefully he doesn't prolong it too much.
Southe,
20-07-2010, 04:19 PM
yea he's known since the start of the series and only 6 editors know the ending incase something where to happen to him. hes good at planning. OP was only meant to last 5 years but he's obviously wanting to make this his lifes work. he's mentioned he wanted to do another manga when he finishes i think it was cowboys? i dno i'd like him to do more shorts afterwards before he does a series again if he does.

"THIS LIST IS ABOUT MANGAKA WHO'S MADE BIG MARKS ON HISTORY, NOT THE MOST REVOLUTIONIZING, WHICH IN THE CONTEXT GIVEN IS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT"
had to remove some swearing xD but yea apparently it was worded wrong on other sites. and if it is big marks on history then sort of explains why he's there hence the best selling manga and all the records he's broke.

Anyway, I finished Ping Pong and Tekkonkinkreet recently. They're both by Taiyo Matsumoto, who is probably one of the most original mangaka's working today. Both were absolute masterpieces and his art is marvelous.

Just gotta love that art.
Right now I am reading Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa, which is about a middle aged loser who has gotten no where in his life until he is finally able to befriend his co-workers. However, he gets beaten half to death by delinquent kids for acting smug when he was drunk with his friends. After recovering he decides he has to fight them to move forward and to stop running away from everything - to finally get somewhere in his life. That is as far as I have gotten but it looks like Kurosawa finally realises the power behind his fists during the fight, hence the title 'Legend of the Strongest Man'. No idea where it'll go after that. Maybe he'll take up boxing or something. It is really good so far though, but since it is by the author of Kaiji that is to be expected. Speaking of Kaiji, why on Earth has no one on here but me watched this masterpiece!?

Isn't Oda busy planning the rest of One Piece? I heard theres some two year time skip coming up or something. I doubt the Bleach film takes up too much of Kubo's time. He probably isn't doing a oneshot because he can't think of anything. I'm looking forward to Sorachi's (his oneshots have always been great) and Kishimoto's (because his art would work well in a baseball manga), but I am going to read them all.

oda is on holiday at the moment well he could be back. 3/4 week without op :( and yea time skip but nothing known about it.. and hes like on chap 596 or something? sure he was planning to start the new world at 600chaps
and oda was always taking week breaks from op because of SW. which the blu ray is awesome has a a feature where they show the sketches along side the film i dno if it was oda's sketches ot not tho.
but yea one shots will be good.

What is Kubo's involvement in the next Bleach film anyway? Surely he isn't doing as much as Oda did with Strong World? Although judging by the title it looks like the next film will feature Hell, so I guess Kubo will have to oversee those parts since we haven't even gotten there in the manga yet. At least not to my knowledge anyway.

New chapter of Claymore was okay. It's kinda despressing thinking how the series could possibly end in 20 or so chapters but that'll take two years to publish thanks to its monthly release. A new series of Genshiken (which is like the best manga I have ever read) was announced last week, but thats going to be a monthly manga as well. Oh the horror. :(
