Hi,

This is very interesting, especially with one of the biggest laptop manufacturers.

I've gone to PC world and they're going to sort it out for me. I'll also be calling HP and perhaps watchdog or a similar company. This is why...

I have had my HP laptop for a while, it is of the DV6000 series and is a very good laptop. I only realised how flawless it was when the techie at PC World asked if there was anything else that might need fixing as it could be included for the one-off fee that I was already paying, and there was simply nothing else wrong with it at all.

The only issue I have had is this screen. When I turn on the laptop, the screen goes white/grey and coloured vertical stripes come down the screen. The number of them and length of them grows as time goes by. When I started explaining to the techie, within a few words and having seen that my laptop was HP, he literally put the words in my mouth for the rest of the story. This is something that they must be seeing extremely often.

In the few minutes that I was in there, 2 other people also came in with very similar HP laptops and exactly the same issue (both astonished to see that the next person along had the exact same issue): the screen and the coloured stripes. We tried plugging it in to another monitor via both VGA and HDMI cables but neither got any image, so we concluded it must be an issue with the motherboard (rather than a connection between the motherboard and screen or anything like that). They're backing up all my data onto a 500GB external hard drive that I can keep and will receive within a couple of days, and they'll be getting my parts and fixing it all for me with no data loss or anything.

Has anyone else had this issue? I can't believe how well he knew it and that 2 other people in just a space of a few minutes came in with the exact same problem... it was not a coincidence.

I forgot to mention, it happened when I turned on my laptop and it made a loud beep (something it's never done before), and the screen didn't seem to be turning on. So I held the off button until it went off and turned it on again, to find my screen like this. I tried squeezing areas around the screen etc. to see if it was just a loose connection but nothing worked.

If you hear your HP laptop beep when turning on, act fast.

If you heared the beep when it came on then yes your motherboard propably is fcuk'd. It could be because of a number of reasons, if the laptops been getting overheated and the fan was blocked and it wasnt able to circulate the air efficiently enough the components could have over heated and your motherboard could be broke.

If you've had it under a year then all you have to do is contact HP because you have a years garuntee with them, theyl come and pick it up, and then theyl replace your mother board then send you a new one asap which usually isnt long as its via Ups, so yeh, its fast.

I have a HP DV9000 (in fact I am really impressed with HP over the last year) I have to admit I haven't had an issue with my laptop, it functions perfectly fine and beeps on load but that has been so for a long time.

The only thing I don't like about my laptop is that it is so heavy I need to basically warm up and do some stretches before lifting the damn thing.

The other thing is that it is prone to overheating (well it gets very hot but still runs) due to the location of the vents when you use it on something like a bed.
