I've had my Sony VAIO VGN-AR51J for around 2 years now, paid around a grand for it back then. It broke a few weeks ago so we sent it back under a warranty and today a letter came telling us that it was unrepairable. They gave us a voucher worth £800 that we are suppose to use for a new laptop, great! But actually no. It says that the laptop must be a Sony VGN-FW31E and after researching it I have found little evidence of it being any better than my old laptop, infact I think it may be worse. I've been unable to find a good source of information that can tell me which one is better and what features make it any better. So far I've found out that the new one is a 16.4" and my old one was a 17". I just can't find any up to date prices for my old one and a full list of specs for my new one. So please could someone post a link or post some information about them. Remember my old one was a Sony VGN-AR51J and the new one will be a Sony VGN-FW31E. Thanks! :)

The old one is better by the looks of it.

Indeed. If it costs less, then :S

Technology has moved on in the last 2 years, a laptop worth 800 then is unlikely to be as up to date/advanced as a laptop you can get for £800 now. I picked it up a few days and apart from the smaller screen its great. It's ram is 4gb and my old 1 was only 2gb. It also has a better CPU.

Sunny.

I was going to say, A model 2 years newer than your old one must be better or what have sony been doing in the 2 year GAP. The prices of laptop has decreased a lot. My first lapto cost me £700 and its probs worth 300 now.

But yh nice laptop

Hi, I would get the new one if I was you because it has:

4gb or ram whereas the old one has 2gb
400GB hard drive instead of 250gb
Bluetooth
The FSB on the new one is a little higher.

I think you would see a dramatic improvement in the speed of the laptop

However the new one does not have a webcam, wifi or a blueray player but you can buy these seperatly.

Yes absolutely. I probably took this laptop and my old one for granted because I never really knew that a lot of people are happy with £300+ laptops. :P

Sorry for this double post but like it has a built in webcam, it has wifi and it also has a blue ray player. :S :P
