Right basically today I didn't go to English as I wanted to do my coursework that is in for tomorrow, they've sent me an email and I need a pretty decent excuse to as why I skipped it.
I was thinking of blaming it on a reoccuring chest infection, but I don't want to go into too much detail as then it sounds like a blatent lie.

Complex lies will catch up to you.. The excuse I would use occasionally was that when I woke up I threw up (and if they asked if I was sick I would say it was apparently something I had eaten the day before) and so I didn't go in because I was afraid I would puke again.
Fairly simple, and usually enough of a reason for them to let it slide. :D

Erm one that works in my school, which is clsoe to urs :P, is that you felt really ill and decided that it'd be better for the class if you didn't show up. They accept that when most people do it.

"Hi, today I didn't go to English as I wanted to do my coursework that is in for tomorrow.
"You've always been my favourite teacher, I find you the most understanding of them all and therefore I know you have chosen to forgive me."

Just say you overslept or something. Don't make up a too big of a lie. I take days of ocasionally to catch up with courswork as it is unbelievable the amount that has to be done.
Trouble is by staying off you miss a whole day of school and could have missed out on something important. But wth.
