Power cut causes roads gridlock

A fault at an electricity sub-station left much of the west of Scotland without power.
Scottish Power said the problem at the Windyhills sub-station affected areas from Glasgow to Oban in Argyll.
Traffic lights were out at many locations causing rush hour disruption. Subway stations had to be closed as lights and escalators were not working.
The fault occurred at about 1620 GMT. Much of the power had been restored by 1800 GMT.
The biggest problems appeared to be on the roads in the west of Glasgow, Bearsden, Milngavie and Clydebank, where traffic lights went out, causing widespread disruption.
Strathclyde Fire Service said it had experienced a high number of call-outs due to alarms being activated by the power cut.
It also reported a high number of lifts which had jammed but said there had been no serious incidents.
Yorkhill hospital in Glasgow was without its main power supply for a period.
Delays of 45 minutes were experienced on the West Coast mainline and other train lines were affected.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport said Partick and Kelvinhall subway stations had been closed after they were affected.
Scottish Power apologised for the fault.
It said engineers aimed to have all supplies fully restored by early evening.

Surely the power went out at 1630 BST?

I'm guessing Scotland don't do what England do and seperate each grid so if a sub-station dies it doesn't halt countless square miles of towns and cities. But the areas are different so maybe that doesn't make it easy for that sort of plan... Still quite serious, at rush hour too :/

Happened in Northern Ireland aswell, just beside my school.



An explosion at an electricity sub-station yesterday caused over 28,000 homes in the Belfast area to lose power.

The blast yesterday was at the Northern Ireland Electricity station at Manse Road in the Castlereagh hills close to Lagan College.
A spokeswoman said no-one was injured in the explosion and engineers were on site trying to establish what had caused the blast.
Power was restored to all customers within 30 minutes by re-routing supply, she said, but had affected customers as far apart as Glengormley and Knock.
Police warned motorists in east Belfast to take care as the power cut knocked out traffic lights on the Upper Newtownards Road junction with the Knock Road and further along the Knock dual carriageway.
The Fire & Rescue Service said they responded to an emergency call and dealt with “a small fire on the ground floor of the sub-station”.

most towns round this area are out of electricity too lol, but we're the main town so it's alright here dunno why. I don't think it's anything to do with that though cause we're north east but i dunno there's loads of places out except here
