Madonna has left Malawi and is heading for London after her attempt to adopt a second child from the poor African nation was rejected.
She is flying to the UK on her private Gulf Stream jet, air traffic controllers in Africa have said.
Reporters were stopped from reaching the airport by roadblocks but police officers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the pop star carried her adopted Malawian son David Banda up the steps to the plane.
But it does not mean she has given up becoming the legal guardian of three-year-old orphan Mercy James, her lawyer has said.
A court in Lilongwe ruled Madonna was unsuitable to adopt the girl because she has not lived in Malawi.
The judge said granting the adoption request would set a dangerous precedent and the singer's lawyer has since "filed notice for the appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal".
The case stirred widespread condemnation from groups across the world, who claimed Madonna was using her fame and fortune to get her own way.
Madonna's spokeswoman rebuffed the allegations, saying: "She is not skirting any legal issues in her application to adopt this child."
David Banda was adopted by the singer in 2006 and he lived with her in London until the process was finalised last year.
At the time, she was married to British film director Guy Ritchie - but the couple have since divorced.
She has two other children, Lourdes, 12, and Ritchie's son Rocco, eight.
