North Korea failed in its attempt to get a satellite into space after a rocket launch early on Sunday, US and South Korean officials say.

Two stages of the rocket and its payload landed in the Pacific Ocean, a US military statement said.

Hours earlier North Korea claimed the satellite had successfully been put into orbit and was transmitting data.

The United States, Japan and South Korea suspect the launch was a cover for a long-range missile test.

They strongly condemned the launch. US President Barack Obama urged Pyongyang to "refrain from further provocative actions".

"North Korea broke the rules once more by testing a rocket that could be used for a long-range missile," Mr Obama told a crowd in the Czech capital, Prague.

"This provocation underscores the need for action - not just this afternoon at the UN Security Council, but in our determination to prevent the spread of these weapons."

The Security Council approved a Japanese request for the emergency session.

Washington, Tokyo and Seoul regard the launch as a clear violation of Security Council resolution 1718 adopted in October 2006, which bans North Korea from carrying out ballistic missile activity.

Looks like they failed again. What's everyone's view on this?

The US military disputes North Korea's claim to have launched a satellite into orbit, saying the rocket's payload fell into the Pacific.

USA say it has failed and its like in the ocean and North Korea say its working and transmitting data... hmm interesting.

Seems like they all have different opinions on whats happened.

How hard can it be to tell the difference between a big rocket going into space, or going into the sea xD

We all know the reason they sent the satelitte up, or attempted to was to test the long range rocket so that they are closer to producing ICBMS and produce more communist propaganda for their people, because they 'won' the space race between the two Koreas'.

In short, it was a success.

I believe that's the one they tested like years ago but also failed?

The UN Security Council is holding an emergency session on a controversial rocket launch by North Korea.

The US and EU said the launch demanded a strong response from the Security Council, but China and Russia have called for restraint.

North Korea said the rocket put a satellite into orbit but the US and South Korea disputed this, saying it was a cover for a missile test.

They said the launch failed, with parts of the rocket landing in the Pacific.

Looks like some action may be taken against North Korea after breaking rules.

Looks nothing like a Russian spy, looks like a Communist leader to me :P

If you're on about Vladimir Putin looking like a Russian Spy that's probably because he was.
