Jade Goody, the reality TV star who died last month of cervical cancer aged 27, represented “all that is paltry and wretched about Britain”, Sir Michael Parkinson has said.

He told Radio Times: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it’s significant, it’s nothing to be proud of. Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it’s not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di.

“When we clear the media smoke screen from around her death, what we’re left with is a woman who came to represent all that’s paltry and wretched about Britain today.

“She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile. Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and became a media chattel to be exploited till the day she died.”

think that deserves some biscuits!

because im sure that jade was given every opportunity he had  im sorry butr for someone to say she grew up on a 'sink estate' and 'barely educated' is beyond the matter. he grew up going to a grammar school, id have liked to see how he ended up not going to a good school and being surrounded by a dingy estate.

ok, she was named a 'racist' but to be fair, its not like anyone else hasnt been racist, im sure you have been with your mates when no ones around.

Fair enough, she shouldnt have had that big of a funeral but she ovbiously had fans otherwise she wouldnt have been that big.

Maybe when Michael Parkinson dies I will call him a boring, over rated talk show host, which he was.

Nice to know he's made an article which he nicely sinks into  Although I did find the funeral a bit much, it's not like we should care. I would of thought more from him to be honest, he has sunk to an all time low. He cannot talk or criticise her, he is a celebrity just like Jade - virtually worthless if the public didn't somehow relate to him in one way or another. I hate celebrity hypocrites, but thankfully he didn't sink as low as Katie Price/Jordan.

Perhaps Parky has realised that since his chat show has gone he's starting to lose his celebrity status so has to come out with comments like this because he loves the spotlight, because lets face it, thats the only reason he came out with this rubbish.

That's disgusting tbh.
I think ******** someone off after their death is much more 'paltrid and wretched' than anything she's ever done.

What's so bad about being brought up on a bad estate?

(Hmm. That's not even a rude word)

Most of you aren't getting the point of what he's saying, are you?

He's not saying like it's her fault she was brought up on a bad estate or anything, he's saying it's classic England, and this is how our country is always portrayed, and that it's a bad idea to have an idol that is someone that has been brought up like that.

His reason is the same as the one of what critics of Jade Goody say, they state that she was after publicity which she herself said she was. Yet here we have someone like Parky who is also seeking publicity yet you are all prasing him for doing exactly the same thing as Jade, the only difference being Jade did it for a good reason.

I think it's worth reading exactly what was said. So here is the full story where he speaks as a journalist, and how he feels the media exploited Jade Goody.

Sir Michael Parkinson has savaged the publicity surrounding Jade Goody - saying she was no Princess Diana, and represented "all that is wretched about Britain today".
The chat show legend made his remarks just days after the reality TV star was buried at a church in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, with giant screens relaying the service to tearful crowds outside.
"I feel sorry for the poor girl. I think she was totally exploited from the moment she went on Big Brother," he told Sky News Online.
"I thought it was very poor, I thought the people who did that should be ashamed of themselves.
"I have been a journalist for 60 years and I am appalled by what's happened to my profession, she was exploited mercilessly by the media."
Thousands lined the streets and left floral tributes to pay their respects to the 27-year-old as her funeral cortege made its way from Bermondsey, south London, where she was born.
Newspaper reports said the outpouring of grief and sea of flowers had echoes of Princess Diana's funeral.
But Sir Michael said: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it's significant, it's nothing to be proud of.
"Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it's not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di."
The 74-year-old added: "When we clear the media smoke screen from around her death what we're left with is a woman who came to represent all that's paltry and wretched about Britain today.
"She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know both drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile.
"Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and from that point on became a media chattel to be manipulated and exploited till the day she died."
He added: "What bothers me is that the media first of all recommended we hate Jade Goody - 'a (not sure why this word is filtered) with a face like a pig', remember? - and shortly thereafter tried to persuade us to celebrate her."
He also pointed to role models that people should aspire to - rather than people who had just become famous through reality TV shows.
"Certain people gift you ambition," he added.
"When I saw Tom Graveney I wanted to be a professional cricketer. When I first set eyes on Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca I wanted to marry her.
"And seeing Alan Whicker on television gave me the idea that a life in telly might be fun," he said, adding: "One out of three ain't bad."

Hmm, the full article makes a more interesting read and doesn't particular target Jade but the media around Jade. The cut-up version Bef quoted made it sound like Parky was attacking Jade :/

He's right, the only similarity between Jade Goody and princess Diana is that they were hounded by the media and it ultimately cost both of them their downfall. Different ways but still, Jade ended up being vilified as the only person in the history of the world to be racist amongst other things and Diana was killed.

I was only like 3 when princess diana died, so i don't know much about her But from what i've heard all she did was charity work, not saying she's a bad person because tbh i know nothing about her.
Jade goody saved women's lives by raising awareness of the disease and urging over women to get tested for cancer. I don't see what's so bad about that?

Lol saved womens lives? No, she didn't. When anyone dies of cancer or a disease they raise awareness, people will get checked and tested. Jade done nothing out of the ordinary. Princess Di done more than Jade. Nothing is bad about Jade 'rasing awareness', it's the publicity that came with it.

Everyone's known about cancer for years, it's not a new disease that nobody understands. We've known exactly how it works, and have some mildly effective ways of treating it. She's done nothing but lap up the limelight and take credit for things she's not done in the final few months of her life.
I agree with most of what Parky's said, apart from him laying the blame entirely on the media, the woman had a publicist.

Technically, the only people who disagreed in this thread was because the creator of this thread didn't quote it right, it made it look like he was belittling Jade calling her scum and such. But, he was actually saying that's what the media made her seem like, when really she was a nice girl who looked after her disabled mum.
