A water safety alert affecting about 220,000 households across Northern Ireland could last all day, officials have warned. People in Greater Belfast and parts of counties Antrim and Down have been asked to boil cooking and drinking water in case it is contaminated.
NI Water issued a warning on Monday after a potential problem was spotted at Dunore Point treatment plant.
David Dangerfield from the company said it was a precautionary measure.
"We take thousands of water quality samples and one of the samples that was reported to us yesterday suggested there may be a problem with the treatment process," he said.
The specific affected by the problem areas include Antrim, Ballyclare, Ballymena, Belfast, Broughshane, Carnlough, Carryduff, Castlereagh, Crumlin, Dundonald, Dunmurry, Glenarm, Glenavy, Holywood, Kells, Newtownabbey, Randalstown, Templepatrick, and Toomebridge.
NI Water said tests would continue until samples returned to normal.
It said customers would be notified as soon as their water could be used without boiling.
Helpline
Customers can get further information and advice by calling the Waterline on 08457 440088.
In a statement, the Northern Ireland Public Health Agency advised people affected by the alert to boil water and allow it to cool before drinking it, using it to prepare salads, fruit or vegetables that will not be cooked, brush teeth or use it in any other direct way.
Dr Richard Smithson, consultant in Communicable Disease Control, said: "It should be emphasised that the risk to public health is very low, but until the situation is resolved, the boil water advice should be followed."
NI Water is conducting further tests of the water supply and with the Public Health Agency, will advise the public when it is no longer necessary to boil water.

Lolol, we had our water cut off for two days last year. At first it started sputtering and then a load of air came out and the taps began to act like pressure washer, shooting the water out. Then it turned into a black sludge :l

who drinks tap water though
As I don't drink fizzy drinks and only really consume drinks which need to be diluted with water I'd say I drink around about seven glasses of tap water a day lol... in fact i don't think I've ever wasted my money on over priced bottled water when I honestly can't tell the difference in taste :)
Obviously if there was a problem with my local water I wouldn't drink it.. :P

I not trying to add to the arguement but I think the other dude is trying to say that Ireland is sort of a different country to N.Ireland so wouldn't be effected anyway.. its sort of like me saying phew glad i wasn't effected being in England :P

Lol whats up with people saying trolls lol!
It describes half of habboxforum:
One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. 'you're nothing but a fanboy' is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevence to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.

Sellafield Nuclear Plant is located on the Northwest Coast of England on the Irish Sea. It is a government owned facility that produces about one-fourth of the United Kingdom's energy. Nuclear waste from this facility had turned the Irish sea into one of the most radioactive bodies of water in the world.

People who have a brain, why would you buy water in a bottle for 80p when you can just get it out of your tap.. It tastes exactly the same plus tap water is good for your teeth it has something in the water so I heard.

You guys are lucky. We in Melbourne have got nowhere near enough water. This is for our biggest dam...
Capacity: 1,068,000
Current volume: 191,857
% full: 18.0
@skepta, do you mean the chemical fluoride (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation)?
That's it I think, and I didn't mean when your water is cloudy, you asked "who drinks tap water anyway" so I replied ;)
luoridated water operates on tooth surfaces: drinking it creates low levels of fluoride in saliva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saliva), which reduces the rate at which tooth enamel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tooth_enamel) demineralizes and increases the rate at which it remineralizes in the early stages of cavities.

Same here, apart from the black stuff lol
