My friends online in the US seem to have a different definition for the term.
What do you think making out involves?

I'm Australian. In my opinion kissing (or snogging) and making out is different...

US and UK (for the few people in the UK who actually use the term) use it to mean kisses yeah, generally with tongue and all that nonsense but not always because having a wet lump of muscle spin around your mouth is not fun
Ive never heard making out refered to as sex :S
it's snogging / pulling / getting with someone.

It's just called getting with someone here. The US call it making out.

You need to find someone that's better at it, it can be really fun! :]
And Making-out means french-kissing in the SouthCoast of England:
Bournemouth/Southampton/Portsmouth/NewQuay/Hayle.
I know that some of my Aussie friends believe it to be more sexual... but yeah.

You'd be totally confused in the midlands, getting off with someone is kissing/snogging whatever you wan't to call it.

Lots of phrases are different in every country.
Hooking up in England means getting together with someone/ going out with them, where as in America it means something very different.
over in wales we say that if you have sex with someone "youve had sex with someone"

actually its pretty much interchangeable. it could be having sex with someone or it can mean getting into a relationship with someone, but it can also just be meeting up with someone. depends on the context, really.

Hooking up has never meant getting into a relationship that I've ever heard, sometimes meeting people ie "just hooking up with some friends and going down Lido II" but mostly actually getting some ie "I want to Landa's and hooked up with a tranny"

Continuously kissing. Doesn't have to be with tongues, but most likely will be.

Interesting. Because 'hooking up' means something else too.

Makeing out means kissing/snogging. As far as i'm aware thats a pretty global definition.

Hooking up on the other hand is pretty interchangeble as has been said. I would generally assume it means sex, but depending on context can mean other things. The Urbandictionary entery for it reflects the confusion
