External HD's are for putting files on, it won't make 'games' run quicker, althought you can store songs and movies on it :P If you can't run games atm and want to you're looking for the wrong product, you need RAM..

It's a laptop, it will have a decent motherboard just might not have a graphics card, but if he can't run a game it's mostly due to his RAM.

Thats crap, nowadays the norm is 2GB - 4GB which is plenty. I'm 90% sure it WOULD be his graphics card.

Games might run a bit slower/take longer to load up if you play it from the HD. :)

I don't mind it taking longer to start up, but will it affect the gameplay majorly, or not too much?

Yeah, when the game is loading textures etc. it will be noticeably slower.
