View Full Version : N.Korea Threatens Military Strike On South
North Korea has threatened action against the South after it joined a US-led initiative to intercept ships suspected of trafficking weapons of mass destruction.

The communist North's military said it will respond with "immediate, strong military measures" if South Korea stops and searches any of its vessels.
In a statement it said it no longer considers itself bound by the armistice that ended the Korean War, following the South's participation in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).
South Korea announced its involvement in the programme on Tuesday, one day after the North conducted a nuclear test.
In the past 48 hours Pyongyang has launched five short range missiles in an act of defiance after the UN Security Council condemned its detonation of an underground nuclear device on Monday.
The fifth was fired across the Sea of Japan as Korean leader Kim Jong Il continued to ignore protests from the UN, the US and its regional neighbours.

A military spokesman quoted by official media said the North could no longer guarantee the safety of shipping off its west coast - suggesting a missile could also be fired in that direction.
A South Korean newspaper reported US spy satellites have detected signs that North Korea has re-started its nuclear plant at Yongbyon.
The newspaper - quoting intelligence sources - said the satellites detected steam rising from the reprocessing facility at the nuclear plant.
North Korea (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/North_Korea) had promised it would restart the reprocessing of spent fuel rods in protest at UN criticism of the launch of a long range ballistic missile in April.

In New York members of the Security Council (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/United_Nations_Security_Council) have gone into closed meetings in an attempt to deliver a unanimous response to North Korea's continued breach of previous UN resolutions.
Ambassadors from the five permanent members of the Council - the US, Britain, Russia, France and China - were joined by ambassadors from the two countries most affected by the nuclear test, South Korea and Japan.
They met for an hour trying to agree on a new resolution but US Ambassador Susan Rice (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Susan_Rice), speaking on behalf of the group, warned it would be a long process.
China remains one of North Korea's few allies but is clearly losing patience with its neighbour.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman repeated that Beijing is "resolutely opposed" the nuclear test and urged Pyongyang to return to the negotiating table.
They don't know what they're getting themselves into.
Wow, US ships are moving in, a high risk of launching missiles by the news channels. N.korea said they didnt want the ships to go in but the US are still moving. This can't be good :|
It's amazing how brave N.Korea are, US could flatten them if they felt like it.

I'd say they're more stupid. Kim Jong-Il just doesn't afraid of anything. He isn't scared about screwing the whole world over, Himself included just so he can achieve some sort of victory.
I think it's gonna escalate into some sort of war. In a very short time period. He doesn't seem to want to back down, And with the US still closing in...

If the DPRK does collapse how doe somebody deal with 30 million starving and brainwashed individuals
Yeah and N.Korea now say that that rule at the end of World War 2 I think no longer is in place... just shows the truth about them. N.Korea act like there own world. All we can do is wait for the US to arrive and see what escalates.

North Korea's threats are deepening its isolation, the White House has said, after the communist nation warned it could attack the South.
"Threats won't get North Korea the attention it craves. Their actions are continuing to further deepen their own isolation," spokesman Robert Gibbs said.
The US statement came after North Korea's military said it would respond with "immediate, strong military measures" if South Korea stopped and searched any of its vessels.
It's a shame they will fire if a S.Korean ship stops any of their ships, yet the US and S.Korea have already said they will...

Well it's all threats atm, we need them to stop a ship to see what happens. It's just both sides trying to provoke a war but neither one wanting to start it. It's sickening that some of you want a war (or invasion should I say?) but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

No, N.Korea aren't afraid. We know that after they continued to fire missiles after warnings. The US know if they stop a ship it could trigger violence but they said they will stop any ship because of the trafficking of mass destruction weapons. N.Korea said they will fire and I can bet you as soon as a US/S.Korea stops a ship and Kim Jong knows then I feel they will launch a missile or two. They have already fired over Japan so they know what their doing, just not what they're getting themselves into.

For the past 60-70 years all they've done is captured a US Warship and shot the occasional South Korean soldier. If they weren't afraid, do you not think they might of actually done something more to provoke a war?

Well they could be afraid but very well at hiding it. At the moment they are acting like nothing matters and as if they're not scared of getting bombed by the US but yeah they could be hiding the fact they are afraid. Let's just wait and see what happens when the US arrive there. China have also said they are losing patients with N.Korea who are allies.
I almost feel sorry for N. Korea... almost...

The DPRK are getting more awesome by the dayWhat do you mean by that? :S
The most scariest things is NKorea can just drop a nuclear bomb and it would affect the whole world, nothing would grow. It's dangerous having someone like him in charge. Luckily US have 24/7 air suvalliance over NKorea.
omg they was showing it on skynews and they all look like robots and the new reported omg she sounded like a man and shouted.
And now the US saying
US Army Chief: 'We Could Fight North Korea'
America could fight a conventional war against North Korea if necessary, even while different types of conflict continue in Iraq and Afghanistan, the head of the US Army has said.
http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2009/May/Week4/15291169.jpg US would be prepared to take on North Korea's army
When asked whether the US would be prepared to fight if war broke out between South and North Korea (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/North_Korea), General George Casey said: "The short answer is yes."
He added: "We'd move forces as rapidly as we could get them prepared."
The US has around 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/South_Korea) and has a long-term commitment to help defend the country.
But there are no plans to send more forces there, even after North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests.
Defence Secretary Robert Gates (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Robert_Gates) said the situation has not reached a crisis level and does not warrant a build-up of US troops.
http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2009/May/Week4/15291173.jpg US-S Korean drill in March 2009
It would normally take the army about 90 days to prepare for a new conventional war, General Casey (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/George_Casey) said.
He said it would take time to "shift gears" away from the type of war the army is engaged in elsewhere, but the US Army is a "combat-seasoned force" which can change tactics quickly.
North Korea warned it might attack its neighbour after South Korea announced it was joining a US-led campaign to stop the trade in weapons of mass destruction.
The move came a day after the North carried out its second nuclear test and said it was no longer bound by the armistice which ended the Korean war in 1953.
Meanwhile, US intelligence officials have spotted activity at a North Korean military facility that has them "kind of worried", according to Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/).
The activity at the Sanumdong research and development complex is consistent with that observed before the launch of the Taepondong-2 missile in the past, the officials said.
They are concerned about speculation North Korea may be preparing to move a warhead by rail.
REPORTS NKOREA FIRED ANOTHER MISSILE OFF THE EAST COAST AFTER UN GIVE THEM A WARNING
North Korea will take "self-defence measures" if the UN Security Council punishes it for a nuclear test - as Pyongyang fires another short-range missile.
http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2009/May/Week4/15291312.jpg North Korean soldiers on guard at one of its borders
The rogue state conducted its second atomic experiment on Monday before a series of missile tests.
Reports said another missile has just been fired off its east coast.
The nuclear test sparked international condemnation and a swift move by the Security Council for a new resolution against Pyongyang.
"If the UN Security Council makes further provocations, we will have no choice but to take additional self-defence measures," a North spokesman said.
So, i assume we can shoot down nukes? or intercept them?
I know we would obliterate North korea if they fired one at us (eu and america) but its the nuke they fire at what could hurt

However they could easily nuke South Korea and possibly Japan.
Voiding please calm, you'd make an excellent Sky news reporter 'AMGZZZZZZ WARRRR!!!' but please dial it down your caps lock is beginning to do my head in.

I'll keep that in mind for the future haha, I did it in capitals because I was amazed N.Korea did it after the UN warning lol...

It's North Korea... Do you expect them to really listen to the UN which it sees as a front for the US?

I was reading an article in the Mirror last week and this columnist was saying how he travelled to Korea and reported secretly. At first, the people of North Korea were a bit wary of him as they thought he was American until he told them. They all absolutely hate America. No-one knows any different. They've blamed American for everything. Yeah, I know this is the same for most regimes like these such as Hitler's.
North Korea are just making themself look stupid. Trying to take on the Americans and then decided, "Oh wait, we won't attack America, instead we attack South Korea, our very powerful neighbours"

i'm scared...
Shouldn't be, North Korea can barely get their birds in the sky and they can only hit closer countries. They may have the capacity to hit West America and Japan, maybe Western China if you stretch it, but really you should hope that the UK doesn't involve itself in this situation.
