View Full Version : General rudeness and lack of empathy.

I was on my way into town on the bus today. On one side of the bus are flip up seats so buggies and wheelchairs etc can have easier access. A young woman had her huge buggy in this area and she was sitting across from it on on the front of the bus seats which are marked as being for the elderly, disabled or those otherwise unable to stand/walk far or whatever.
The bus wasn't too packed at first so it was okay, but then more people and also loads of old people started getting on, who needed seats obviously. The woman stands up for a moment to check something on the buggy or her child or something and an elderly man takes her seat on the crowded bus. She complains - "jump in my grave!" I just couldn't believe anyone could be so rude or selfish - she would have quite happily remained sitting there while a frail old man had to stand up on a moving bus for his journey. Whatever happened to common courtesy and empathy for others?
On the way back on the bus, it was crowded again. A rather large young woman and her friend who both had buggies boarded the bus. Instead of waiting patiently for a moment while the people seated in the flip up seat area got up to make way for her, or politely asking them to move so she could wheel her buggy into place, she simply shouts out "YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO MOVE!"
Of course, she has every right to use the allocated places for her buggy, of course she does but why did she have to shout so rudely at a load of passengers who would have happily moved for her anyway?
The two women also had two young toddlers with them, who proceeded to sit behind me and my mum. A few minutes later, we both felt a spray of wet on our backs and I looked round to see the little boy with his hands covered in spit and throwing his bit of chewing gum out of the window and smearing the window in his saliva. Nice.
I moved because I felt sick and watched as the little girl played about with the window next to my mums head and snapped it closed. Kids will be kids I know but surely these women should have controlled their children and prevented them from spraying people with spit and fiddling with the windows. The little girl could have easily trapped her fingers in the window which would have been awful.
I'm not a mother, but I'm sure it's difficult having kids but still, it looked as though the women knew this was going on and did nothing to prevent it.
Am I being grumpy and stuck up here or is my annoyance justified?
I know what you mean, especially with buses not being the most comfortable of public transport, it never helps when some people basically act selfish/so regardless of others, so yes, I think your annoyance is justified :P
Edit: Strangely enough, I used Brighton in my english exam today, what a coininkydink :)

I just hate bad manners and its people of all ages now. I am always getting mowed down in Asda by people on those invalid scooters. Still those of us who care can still be polite and help where we can. :)

people have no respect for anything or anyone nowadays. its a pity.
I have been getting the bus for 4 school years every single day. Things like this happen quite often. One morning I got on the bus, all the seats where took apart from one. There was a man who looked around 40 who was sat in the seat next to it so I said "excuse me please" and he said "your legs are younger than mine, you can stand" All I wanted him to do was move up :S so I explained that I wanted to sit in the seat next to him rather than me taking his seat and he just looked at me and said "you heard me". I just gave him a confused look and walked to the front of the bus where I stood for most of the journey until someone got off the bus. You have to remember that a bus is a form of public transport, there are many odd people in the public.

I don't see why people don't say things. Like on the bus if someone is playing tinny music on their phone I will ask them to use headfones or turn it off because it's a public space (depending on their size :P) like at the cinema when someone is kicking your seat. I ask them to stop because I'm trying to enjoy the film.
Take control of your situation!

I agree but it isn't always the right thing to do, some people that you may encounter won't retaliate in a normal manner no matter how you express yourself. It may be because of their background or mental problems. For example; If you asked a group of scallys sat at the back of the bus to turn off their music, do you really think they would do? Not to mention how they would react to you. Same with people who are a bit loopy or just plain ignorant, they won't listen to you and will just go on with themselves. Best of just leaving it sometimes.

If it was a bunch of scallys I would ask, probably. Again, depending on size and age :D

I always get the bus and train and I would give my seat up on the bus but not the train, dno why. On the train today there were old people (50+) around me standing whilst me and my friend had a seat.

Me too, depends on my mood though. If I'm in a good mood (nah I mean srsly good mood) I'll give up my seat but if I'm in a bad mood I won't. If I suffer I make sure everyone else does too :eusa_ange
I never go on long journeys anyway so I'd tolerate it just so I don't cause any problems, if I'm on a long journey into town or whatever I'll be with a group of friends so we'll probably be the ones making the noise :D If someone was to tell me to be quiet in this situation it'd spur me on to put my music up louder or be even ruder to annoy them but that's just me :eusa_danc

Lol. :P When I was waiting to go into a science lesson a mentally disabled kid drove over my foot in his electric wheelchair. I didn't say anything because like I said he suffers from some kind of mental disease. He clearly didn't mean to do it but it does make me wonder if he's fit to navigate through a thin corridor on his own.

I always hate getting the bus home from my work when the schools have just come out. They are always rude and play their music up high even though the driver threatened to throw them off the bus.
So far I haven't had to give up my seat but I know what Velvet means about mothers with buggies being annoying. Someone tried to bring their buggy on that was up even though we already had 2 buggies and a wheelchair up :l

And its annoying when your waiting for the bus for ages, then someone comes along and just walks infront of you and gets onto the bus.
Also on quite a busy bus back from the nature centre :P
I was sitting by this random man and no-one gave there seats up to this old lady, she walked and stood by us and the man went to me "Get up and give the lady your seat"
Fair enougth I could of gave her my seat but what was the problem with him getting up ans giving her his seat?

I think its worse when I'm on an empty bus and a weird old man gets on and decides to sit next to me and traps me up against the window instead of one of 50 other empty seats :P
I hate public transport full stop to be honest purely for the thread starters reasons.. I mean even on planes... EasyJet don't allocate seats so its a bit like a bus or train where you have to choose your seats once your on the plane so sometimes you are seperated.. anyway usally they allow groups with children below the age of five on the plane first.. erm well what annoys me is how its not only the children and mum and dad... usally its the children, mum, dad, teenage brother, auntie marge, uncle bob, grandma betty, grandad joe, cousin Brian etc etc lol
Because of this last time my family paid for 'speedy boarding' meaning we get to go on the plane even before the people with kids under 5 years of age... well as soon as they announced speedy boarders all of the mums with buggys used their buggys as battering rams we had to fight our way to the front and my mum nearly ended up punching a woman for telling everyone speedy boarders don't pay any extra and we were the ones being rude for pushing lol :8

It's because Britain is a crap country and all efforts to nuke the joo joo out of it should be taken into consideration. Common courtesy died years ago when the chav/lower-socialite virus took effect, wiping out the courtesy gene - aswell as bees and red squirrels (I've thought this through, clearly :P).
Horse people for example, 9/10 of horse people have the arse-hole gene. They take no consideration for their surroundings, don't know how to train horses and lack common courtesy. It's the same with lorry drivers and women with babies. Think of it as flu, and the other variants - bird flu/swine flu.
If I was told that, I'd say "No. I was going to be courteous(sp?), but if you want to take that tone with me then you can sit somewhere else you fat FREAK!"
I'm hoping scientists create a gas that wipes out the chav/anti-social gene along with the person who has it - It'll be awesome :D

I agree with what you're saying but old people nowadays expect us to get up, open the doors for them etc. and they don't even say thanks. They must think it's a necessity for us to do that. I've encountered numerous occasions where I've held the door for old women for them not even to acknowledge me and not even say thank you.

They are a bit dopey though, it comes with being old - bless them :P I've held the door open for some elderly men and women before and because I'm tall they don't see my hand reaching out above them holding the door lol :P
In my area, old people are quite courteous though, so maybe it's different in Scotland and other areas? The problem with Essex is kinda true in the stereotype, the teens to mid-ages. The elderly and young are ok, though of course there are exceptions :P

I have experienced that as well. They normally only say thanks if I am in my work clothes but in my normal clothes they just don't bother. Although I do seem to have a face that seems to say "You can talk to me I'm open" as everybody seems to want to talk to me at a bus stop lol

It's just the everyday burdons and inconveniences of public transport. Hence why I'm learning to drive the day I turn 17, literally.
