October 22nd :) (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/06/02/microsoft-confirms-windows-7-release-date-to-be-october-22nd)

According to cnet (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10253924-56.html), Microsoft has officially confirmed that Windows 7's release date will be October 22nd, and will be available on both store shelves and new PC's.

Microsoft Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said that in order to meet this release date, development of Windows 7 will wrap up by the middle or end of next month.

Last month, Microsoft made the Windows 7 release candidate available for download (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/05/05/exclusive-windows-7-rc-download-goes-live). "The feedback from the release candidate has been good", says Bill Veghte.

It looks like OEM's are also ready to go as well. "We're locked and loaded for the launch. The quality of code is just absolutely stellar.", says Phil McKinney, CTO of HP's computer (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/06/02/microsoft-confirms-windows-7-release-date-to-be-october-22nd#) unit. Previously, Acer said that Windows 7 will be available on October 23rd (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/04/30/acer-says-that-windows-7-will-be-available-october-23rd), one day later than the confirmed release date.

We're still waiting for pricing details to be announced, which is expected later this month. Starting June 28th,

users who buy a new PC with Windows Vista, will receive a free upgrade to Windows 7 (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/02/22/windows-7-upgrade-program-shifts-to-june-28). Students may also be able to get Windows 7 at a discount or even for free (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/04/14/students-how-to-get-windows-7-legally-at-a-discount-or-free). :O

Nice, dw won't be stopping. ;)

Lol, i'm too young to get it.... :(

Student's as in 16-22 ish? :S Never mind I'll find someone who can get me a discount/free. :D

Oh and one last thing, i think this is probably true as the release candidate from my point of view looked basically finished.

Fingers cross there will be no hardware problems with Windows 7. :P

I'll just buy a brand new desktop PC with the specs made for Windows 7 with my EMA.

Win7 is looking quite good. I can't wait for it to become mainstream so I can get rid of Windows crap.

Windows are usually good at fixing hardware problems, Vista sorted out all of mine within a few updates at least. Isn't 7 pretty much everything like Vista, just improved and a bit snazzy looking?

Students are usually anyone with a student card (when buying in store) or student email addresses (.ac.uk - when buying online). If you have either one then that usually works :) I think they may consider anyone in school a student too, but don't hold your breath.

Win7 is a hell of a lot faster than Vista, and much prettier.

WOOT!

I'm a student if win7 was free that would be flipping awesome but if not a discounted price is just as good.

Free Win7 would rule.

Technically students can already get any MS O/S's free, so long as the UNI subscribes to the MSNDNAA thingimy (most do)
But free by default would also be great, no complaints at additional copies :p

I'm guessing by student they mean anyone at University (18+). There is something for University students where you can download Windows software for free called Windows DreamSpark, I'm guessing they would use this.
