Mr Purnell said he no longer had confidence in the Prime Minister and said he should step down for the good of the Labour Party. It comes as polls closed in the local council and European elections.

In a resignation letter released to several newspapers, Mr Purnell said Mr Brown's continued leadership makes a Conservative victory more, not less, likely. Mr Purnell pointed out in his letter that he was not seeking the leadership himself. The senior Blairite's departure follows the loss of three ministers from the Cabinet in as many days.

Yet another minister and this time he has stated his opinion out in the open compared to Jacqui Smith and Hazel Blears, although i'm totally against Gordon Brown and the Labour Party it must feel horrible to have people backstabbing you like this, but it is politics afterall.

It couldn't of come at a worse time either, with the European Election polls just closing it seems that after the Daily Telegraph expenses row and the continuing resignation of key ministers that if Labour do desperatley bad in the election, thus coming under UKIP or even lower, that UKIP and the EU could finally bring to an end Gordon Browns premiership.
