i think its meant to be a cube with a triangle coming out the side of it..

Infact.. its a hendecagon. It has 11 sides.

6 on the cube.
5 on the triangle majig

It's a OCTAGON.

It has 8 sides if the triangle is attached to the cube.

All 8 sided shapes are called OCTAGONS.

No it wouldnt, because the base of it is level with the base of the square..

Did your graphics teacher draw it like that? The perspectives are wrong on the triangle bit. The indent should be on the other side of the triangle to match the orientation of the cube.

And I don't have a clue what it's called.

Yeah.. theres the left and right sides, And the front face - 3 + 6 (cube) = 9
