European buyers of Windows 7 will have to download and install a web browser for themselves.

Bowing to European competition rules, Microsoft Windows 7 will ship without Internet Explorer.
The company said it would make it easy for PC makers and users to get at and install the web browsing program.
In response Brussels expressed scepticism over the move and whether it went far enough to ally accusations of it abusing its market position.

Except we can't download a web browser without a web browser you idiots, they can still only download IE8 it still does nothing...
And so the insanity won out.

***? Apple computers ship with Safari.

It's their product so they can ship it with whatever the hell they want, whether that be a crap web browser, porn or a load of viruses.

I know, and the only way to get another internet browser is to install IE in the first place, unless we have to start buying FF from stores. This is the most stupid idea on the planet....

No, there will be a link on the start menu and/or desktop saying "Download Internet Explorer 8 Here" and when you double click it it will start downloading. You don't have to have a web browser to download something.

I think this should also mean computers are no longer allowed to ship with a user interface. I mean, any company that put their own user interface on one of their products would surely abusing and taking advantage of the customer? Users should have to install a GUI of their own choice and not have one forced upon them by the big, bad computer companies .

They still have to install IE8 to download FF...
This would be a great time for UKIP to take over and rid us of our tech hating EU...

The internet browser can already be diesabled and manafacturers can do that themselves and install a different one.... all this is going to do is create a whole load of confusion for old people.

Time for me to comment.
When you sign up to a new ISP, they usually send you a disc to install their crappy software and stuff, and it always has a browser on it too (all the ones that I've used have anyway).
So you don't need IE to install another browser.
Tadaaa.

Has everyone kinda forgot that explorer.exe (windows explorer) can be used as a web browser if no browsers are installed?

More reason to abandon the EU :D

This is pretty stupid. No-one complained about IE other than the chronically brain dead. Why Microsoft? All other companies and gadgets, including the iPhone, ship with stuff people may not necessarily want. It's so random yet stupid :/ Having a shortcut on the desktop to install IE8 is just, well, pointless. The majority are going to install it anyway, because some websites/servers prefer IE8 for special things that Firefox can't process properly.

I was kinda expecting Windows 7 to come with Windows/Microsoft related things, like WLM, WMP, WMC and so on...

You still need to download it..Stop fussing about web browsers. There will be ways to get web browsers I assure you, it is not the end of the internet. And Firefox Portable is portable dur, so you put it on a memory stick and could access it that way.

When I buy Windows, I'm paying for the development of Windows Live products, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player so why do I have to download them separately? I'm paying for them so I should get them and Microsoft would give me them but the damn EU is just singling out Microsoft.

Whatever next? Perhaps they should remove Safari off iPhones? It's even less competitive that they don't even let you install other web browsers.

Still alot of effort to be honest. I remember seeing an article on Netscape and pictures of Netscape being sold along side Internet Explorer in shops.

I'm pretty sure it'll work like this, I saw a screenshot of this a while ago. When setting up the internet you get a pop-up and you get to pick a browser to download, IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari, tick the one you want and it downloads it and sets it up for you.

I wish politicians would keep their focus on running their god damn countries as oppose to meddling with these sort of affairs. Either way IE is an established web browser so bundled with it or not people are going to use it.

Why don't Microsoft have the right to give a web browser with their operating system I mean it certainly is something I would expect to come with an OS.

It is not like we are in some sort of tie-in clause with IE where by no other web browser can be installed if your using IE.

Didn't Microsoft suggest people used Firefox at one point when there were serious security problems? It is very odd and pointless, everyone uses IE at some point, even the people who don't like it. Sometimes you have to visit websites that don't like Firefox, I can't remember the last time I had to do that but it wasn't that long ago :P

Same. Saves alot of unnecessary effort to download it later on, and having to download another browser. Might aswell just have IE8 pre-installed so you only need to download one (less or) other browser (for example).

Chippiewill
12-06-2009, 11:23 PM

Everyone does realise this will only apply to disc bought versions of W7?
OEMs will have the option to include any browser they want on their installations of W7, some may choose to put firefox on but almost all new machines will ship with a browser.

Opera are pushing for some kind of tick box browser installation when you install W7.
It's ridiculous, it's Microsofts product, they should be allowed to do what they want. Does it really matter if Opera can't gain market share :S?
