Ann Widdecombe should of got it, she had the public behind her - but then again who would of expected our corrupt MPs to vote for what the public want?
At least Michael Martin has gone and Margaret Beckett didn't get it, thank the lord.
Well deserved and still can't believe I've been watching it since 3pm lol
Looks like a cheery chap

Seems okay, Labour seems to like him more than the Tories lol but I suppose if he unites parliament that can only be a good thing when picking a speaker.
I agree though Ann Widdecombe would of been good.

Disasterous decision for the Conservative party today.
I agree and i was fully behind Anne to become the new speaker however, it looks like labours little plan has worked a treat.
Its rather obvious that labour didnt want another labour speaker as the past two have been labour, however they wanted someone who they knew would be a "problem" for David Cameron.
Whilst the new Speaker is a Conservative MP, he is not very popular amongst the party and whilst it is an entire house of commons election Its still such a shame that the house has became yet again corrupt. I say this because Bercow had previosuly thought about reforming to the labour party.
Mind you, atleast Beckett didnt get the job.
Hopefully, when the new cabinet has being reformed at the next general election, some senior Conservative MP's will challenge Bercow and overthrow this slimey and corrupt person.

2 quick questions:
Why do people like Widdecombe and why do they dislike Beckett?
+rep for decent answers.

Ann Widdecombe is a generally likeable figure, and Margaret Beckett is seen as arrogant and generally out of touch by the public. On Question Time a few weeks ago over the expenses scandel, Beckett stated that the public didn't understand the scandel - which caused great anger, causing the most booing I have ever heard on Question Time, well apart from when John Bolton told everyone they didn't understand the Iraq war when we clearly did, we know it was a big fib.
Widdecombe is seen as strong and similar to a old school headmistress and Beckett is loathed by many and much of 'Middle England' which are the people who make the swing in elections, and in the end it depends on elections. It is a great shame Widdecombe didn't get the job and it will be sad to see her stepping down at the next General Election, along with other figures such as Michael Howard.

If Bercow increases the MPs salary by £30,000 then oh gosh. Seriously annoy me.
Heyyy the public are angry with us? Well lets make more money.

Something tells me that the Pirat Partiet would actually be better in general as a government, not just the piracy topic.....
