Why is it that my router says I get 1856 kbs but I only download things about about 100kbs, 200kbs at max??

Because

When you buy, lets say 2MB broadband, what you actually download on the browsing is 250kbp/s.

The router says speed to the ISPs connection servers, other sites can be busy or to far away. Basically it's really complicated and depends on distance from server, your connection speed, time of day.

Go to speedtest.net to see if you are being scammed though

Torrenting will seriously cap your speed...

Because they advertise speed in megabits, and you download in kilobytes and megabytes.

Actually the speed in your router is the speed that your ADSL modem inside the router and the DSLAM at your local exchange is synchronized at. This is the speed your router and equiptment at the exchange has negotated as the max speed for your line (Note: it is capped at the advertised speed for your service), not the speeds between you and some server.

Yes, but it will only ever transfer at the speed of the slowest link.

Sure you don't mean you have 6GB download cap and 1mb download speed?
